Yep, happens all the time, mostly in clothing stores where they're selling trendy crap. I don't even wear trendy stuff, although I do try to look nice, and yet people are always walking up to me and asking me what sizes there are. Sometimes I answer their question anyway because I don't know beforehand that they believe I'm an employee. I've even talked about fabrics with an old couple who was buying something for their son.

I got asked when I was 11 in Bhs where the lingerie was. I was in my school uniform of a light blue shirt and navy skirt, and was 5'4" when I was 11. (I'm still 5'4" now!) I just stared at the woman though - was truly speechless....

Yummm.....photo?

(did they give you the commission?)
Or at least a Tee shirt?

I wish. They're not the brightest stars in the galaxy. I think they asked me how to get music onto their display iPods or something equally intelligent.

I haven't so much been mistaken as an employee as taken it upon myself to be one (temporarily).

For example:

There are times I will be at Circuit City or the Apple Store and will see potential customers walking or standing around with dazed/confused looks on their faces in front of particular pieces of equipment, with no help in sight. I usually engage them in polite conversation and honestly answer any questions they may have.

Relatedly, I will often overhear Employees at Circuit City (or similar) answer questions from enthusiatic but uneducated customers either in a inane or manipulative manner. I usually take it upon myself to interject with more honest options. I have been thanked on many occasions.

I also tend to buss my own dishes at restaurants and occasionally other people's as well...

I have worked in the service indutry so long, it is like second - nature, even though I don't really work in it anymore...

I guess I just want people to make informed decisions and to be happy.

Wow! You are super service man!

Happens all the time. Well, used to, when I still actually went shopping a lot.

Of course, it could be that as somenone who used to work retail sales, I pity some messes that crazed shoppers leave behind so I'll be refolding whatever I was looking at myself and someone will assume I work there.

It happened to me twice. Once I wore a red shirt into target and two people asked me if I could help them find something. The second time I wore a blue shirt into Best Buy and again was asked by two people to help them find something. Funny thing was, I was wearing shorts both times and neither store allows their employees to wear shorts. Must have been my fault for wearing the same colored shirt. :p
