Can you say OCD?
Exactly. What's the point of restoring? If if works fine, leave it alone. Any performance improvement is only in your head.
Do you even have to restore when you upgrade the OS? The only time I've restored my iPhone is when I transferred the existing information from my old 3G to my new 3GS yesterday.I know 2 people with iPhones, and neither have had to restore, except for the upgrades in the OS.

That's what I meant by "restore." When I first plugged my 3GS to iTunes, it asked me whether I wanted to configure it as a new iPhone or "restore from the backup." I chose the latter. In fact, I've always thought "restore" to mean "restore from the backup." What do you mean when you say "it doesn't actually restore the iPhone"?Just right click on the iPhone 3GS in the iTunes sidebar and click "Restore to Backup". It doesn't actually restore the iPhone, it just writes the backup data to it.

I would call that a "reset" rather than "restore." To me "restore" indicates bringing back what has been saved. When you start form a clean slate, you've got nothing to restore from.Is it possible to restore fresh without using the back up and still keep your phone numbers and what not? I hear that's the best type of restore... clean without the back up....
Where do you find that option? The context menu displayed when you right-click the iPhone icon on iTunes does not include that option.1. You can click "Restore" in iTunes and it will completely erase your iPhone and restore to the latest firmware.
Trust me, your phone runs slow. If you restore it now you will see a difference, it just happens gradually over time. If you don't restore from a backup you will see a pretty big difference. Other software issues are rare and are usually caused by user actions.
Seriously, I never have. I dread the day that I ever have some of the problems people have on here.
Oh, of course I restored for the upgrade to OS 3.0.

Is there any danger in doing a DFU restore?
How long does it take, compared to a normal restore?
What are the steps?
is it possible to do option #2 and still get all your contacts back on the phone? ( without re-entering them )
