Every two years on average.
Jan '03 - Aug '03 - G3 12" iBook
Aug '03 - Feb '05 - Titanium PowerBook
Feb '05 - May '07 - 15" Aluminum PowerBook (Would have kept this one longer but a bottle of water spilled in my bag on the way to work one morning and killed it prematurely.)
May '07 - June '09 - 15" MacBook Pro
June '09 - Present - 13" MacBook Pro

I plan on keeping this baby for at least 4 years until I graduate from college. My old iMac was was from 2003, which I left at home, but some of my family members still use it. It's fine, but slow, even with a ram upgrade.

Had mine just over a year, will probably upgrade to 4Gb of RAM and go to a 7200rpm HDD around Xmas, that will hopefully make it last me until 2011, so i can go for a Mac Pro + MacBook Air for Uni.

Aside from the survey... but I have a question here that some of you are consistently saying...

To all former PC notebook owners, what makes the notebook not last so long? One year, and then an upgrade? Was it the OS, or hardware giving out?

Stupid viruses or something killed our Toshiba Satellite in no time- even with Norton and not downloading anything:confused:? Now it's useless.:(

I find myself upgrading computers every 3 years (as the AppleCare runs out), or if I find my computer can't run the app(s) I need. I just replaced my 15" MBP whose AppleCare expires in Oct with the 13" MBP.

I also have 3 dedicated Macs used as DVRs which are now mostly out of AppleCare.

I bought my first laptop in 2001, it was a NEC Versa Note (PIII 600MHz)

mid 2003: My second laptop was a Sony TR1 (PM 900MHz), I used it as my main computer until mid-2008 when it broke down. I fixed it six months later using it concurrently with the computer below.

mid 2008: Asus eeebox (Atom 1.6GHz).

mid 2009: Macbook Pro 13 :) (2.26)

I am looking to use the mac for at least 4 years..... I will only replace it if I can't fix something myself e.g. motherboard.

I usually change my computers when there is major hardware failures, nothing else to do and out of warranty, so it varies i've had a desktop pc for 5 years a couple of others for 3 years, and i bought my first macbook in october 2008 with applecare, and i plan to change it at the end of applecare if there is a new design out by then, if not i will keep it until it stops working. :)

3-5 years depending on hardware failure after the applecare warranty is up. Also might be convinced to buy early if there is something new and interesting.

I upgrade about every 2 years. June '04: iBook G4... May '06 Black MacBook... October '08 UMBP.

It seems pretty polarized on here though, most seem to people upgrade either constantly or every 3-4 years.

Owned a Macbook for 1 year now. 2 more years to go. Hoping for USB 3, i7 quad-core and gt120's and 1 TB 2.5 hard drives.

Bought the old MBP in March 2008. Upgraded to Unibody in October 2008. Sold 15" Unibody on eBay couple of weeks ago and I've just ordered 13" MacBook Pro. I'm a freak when it comes to computers and stuff. For example I got my 16GB 3G iPhone in September 2008 and I paid a lot of money to upgrade early to the 3GS a couple of weeks ago because I always want the latest gadgets.

Ideally every 3 years but sometimes it makes more sense to buy a new one instead of upgrading an older machine.

I had an HP 12.1" touchscreen, but that started to poop out on me. Got my new 17" MBP pro today! Hopefully it'll last me for 3-5 years.

2 questions for you! (I own an HP right now).

1. What were you using your notebook for? (College, work, etc?)
2. How long did it last before it started pooping out on you?

i do a lot of heavy video and some 3d graphics on my 2-3 yr old MBP(c2d 2.33). All I had to do was upgrade the ram (3gb max) and eariler this year put a 500gb HDD in it. It is slower than the linux ubermachine I use at work but it gets me by just fine.

People who upgrade every year or sooner are just doing because they want the latest thing. I am constantly amazed at how much people whine and moan about performance and upgrades and then use their laptop for youtube and facebook.

90% of users out there are not using even a fraction of the power of their machines, except for gamers. The only people who are really stretching things like GPU and mutlicore performance are in the visual effects and scientific research industries.

Right now, the Macbook Pro is my secondary computer to my iMac (got it as a replacement for a MBA).

I plan to go back to the Air once the issues are completely resolved (among other things). However, this Tablet is interesting. If it can handle iWork and other things, I may go for it.

I used to update every year, but I'm holding onto my Revision E MBP until it dies.

Upgraded to 6GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD.

This one's a keeper.
