Mac user since November, first one. I just let it sleep, only restarted on one occasion when it didn't work as it should and a reboot seemed the rght solution to my Windows mind!

My Win 8.1 Pro laptop is just allowed to sleep but it does need to be switched off every week or so as it slowly becomes unstable. I have not noticed that at all with the Mac.

As a long time MSWindows user (since 3.0) I think it is wise to reboot your
iMac or MacBook every so-many months, but OSX has proven me to be much
more stable, probably also by the way applications are installed/removed.
;JOOP!

why everyone put their "macs" to sleep all the time, computers still eat up electricity. fatuity..

If I know I won't be using it in a day or two, I will shut it off. I use it everyday. So, I will restart when I feel it needs a restart! :D

I haven't shut down one of my computers in at least 10 yrs, possibly more.

My macs are set to auto start after a power outtage so unless the computer completely hangs up, I touch the power button once.:p

Usually on sleep, restarted if need it, I'm using an UPS for iMac and Time Capsule.
Shut it down when going on vacations.

Restart if an update requires it and very occasionally if there's something stuck, but otherwise it's on all the time and running Boinc and bitTorrent in the background.

I shutdown my machine when I leave home more than a day.
And no, it is not an ecological disaster: your adsl modem needs 10x more power than a sleeping Mac...

And for those who never reboot, please join the uptime race! :D

I shut mine down at the end of each day. Never had any problems in 15 years and I keep my Macs for about 4-5 years.

I shutdown maybe once in a week or two when I'm away from home,
while multiple reboots are daily routine.

Almost Never

At the top of the tread someone suggested that lightbulbs don't burn out when running, only when turning on – that's how I feel about it too.

It's winter here so thunderstorms and their power surges are unlikely in my part of the world. If/when one is anticipated I'll shutdown if I'm going to be away, otherwise I sleep it with a password protected lock screen.

I don't think there's a "right" way. It seems every method mentioned "just works." :)
