I bought the Early 08 Penryn MBP and would still have it now if it weren't for a multitude of problems that led to Apple giving me a i5 Unibody. I didn't mind the speed of the old one and actually like the older design more (especially the keyboard). I would have used that laptop for as long as it would have lasted.

Well just sold my 2010 mbp 13" this evening kept the vertex 2 put back the odd and gave them the momentus XT plus 8gb ram I got for $68. Thanks to the microcenter deal for $999 mbp last year I think I broke even on my sale. I win! That's third mb I've had now in two and a half years haha

i just bought my mac last year(december) and its the MBP 13". I just went for it because of portability but i now know i made a mistake since im into photography and all the adobe/autodesk/Maya 3D and really needs the 15" for it

so i need a new MBP ASAP

I don't have a MBP, but I seem to buy new laptops every 2 years lol .

i buy the new mbp, use it until the new one comes out, then sell it for the same price i paid...then i repeat that.

that way i can always stay ontop of the tech without losing money :)

I upgrade often, haven't had a set laptop for over 6 months... maybe it's the fact that I have been able to sell my Macs and laptops for as much as I paid for them and only have to spend a bit more to do other things to them and stay on top of technology... I plan to upgrade come next announcement =)

Serious question for a second. Do you guys typically use Craigslist or eBay or something else? After I upgrade this next time around, I kinda want to start doing this (upgrading every revision).

eBay to get more for your machine, Craigslist to sell faster and easier, but maybe for less. I personally use Craigslist since I don't like the idea of having to pay to post, and Craigslist means I get cash when I sell (don't have to worry about PayPal gouging me).

I ind craigslist hassle free when it comes to selling. I always have a good idea of how much I want for it and list it as such, firm pricing. I listed my mbp yesterday and I had a buyer in 45min I swear. This method is great if u live in a larger city. I'm in Tampa and the guy drove an hour to meet me. I've also sold on eBay but after paypal fees, eBay fees and fear of shipping I now prefer in person, straight cash business. But eBay is still great as I've sold two laptops that way for a great cost.

It helps if you are able to buy cheap or on sale but if not then a hit of $100-$300 isn't bad. I always have resale in mind though, so I usually will protect my stuff and keep original boxes etc. This last one I had invisible shield and I took it off before selling, damn it was in pristine condition. Minor upgrades done on the cheap really help sale value too. I've been an eBay guy for ten years now so I've learned some things. Sorry for any typos on my iPod.

My MacBook Pro will be more than 5 years old when I upgrade this summer. That's right, my first generation Core Duo MBP is still running like a champ (aside from occasional problems like graphical glitches from the graphics card overheating).

I'll be going from a 15" 2.0 GHz CD MBP to a 13" MBP. I'm looking forward to a lead forward in performance. Also, being able to run 64 bit apps will be nice.

I'm also the kind of person that likes to hold on to his stuff and because of this resale never really enters my mind.

I'll upgrade my non-unibody when it dies or when university is about to end for me(one last crack at that student discount). Whichever comes first.

Mid-2007 Santa Rosa 2,2 Core 2 Duo here.
I had the Logic Board replaced almost two years ago under warranty, and I upgraded as soon as I got it to 4GB of RAM and later 320GB HDD. Not planning to upgrade until this thing dies or if a new OS appears and it's both
a)not supported on my MBP
b)has a killer feature
As I get more and more into 3D stuff, I might get a PC laptop if I really need more processing power on the go, but I doubt it, and in any case, the MBP would go to my girlfriend, who wouldn't need a new OS anyway.
If the hard drive dies, I'll swap it, so it's all down to the screen and the logic board, which are the two components too expensive to be worth replacing.

So basically, until it dies.
