How often do you upgrade your IPad ?

iPad 3 to iPad mini 2 (because A5x processor was really slow) to 9.7" iPad Pro (mainly for Apple Pencil and split screen).

When the new features are compelling enough for me to want to upgrade, I guess.

iPad 2
iPad 3
iPad 4
mini 2

And that's it. I'm still using the mini 2 now as my only iPad. It has the perfect size for me, and I don't have much complaints about its performance (not perfect, but still usable for me, even for some gaming and MS Office on the go). My next upgrade will be a mini with pencil support, whenever that will come out.

Monstress is a new one to me.

Though it's not the overriding concern, the artist is a big factor for me. Some characters I follow, regardless of the creative teams, but having a good artist helps a lot. It's one reason I picked up on Fatale and Criminal so early as I did.

I will wait however long it takes for v2 to drop.

Even then, I will most likely wait for a $100 off sale before I order...ie. in all probability it may mean up to 4-6 month wait after v2 launches. I can wait...I'm very patient and my ipad2 functions perfectly in the meantime. Still have 3.5gb free for comics... 🙂

And if v2 doesn't have better battery life, I will definitely take my time upgrading to whatever model I do decide to get. 256gb should be fine, I don't really think 512gb would benefit me much, but I will consider it.

Incidentally, anyone buying the entry level storage model ie. the 32gb model...I consider them to be village idiots. They will regret it. Next bump up is still relatively cheap, all things considered.

Ok, amend that...not village idiots, but definitely thinking small. 🙂

I am still using my Mini 2 w/Retina. I am very surprised because I bought it when it first came out and it's still working perfectly fine. Even the battery is still great.

I had the original Mini, but it was slow with the apps that I needed to use, so I thought the Mini 2 would get slow after a few updates. But it's still going strong.
 
I've got 2, which are both well dated. My daughter still uses my iPad 2 and I play some games on my iPad Mini 2, but I've still not really got the whole tablet thing. I just can't see how people use them to get any meaningful work done, unless you don't have a desktop or laptop?

It depends what your type of work is. If you need to type a lot, I find a desktop computer to be best. But I can still get a lot of work done on my iPad Mini 2 when it doesn't involve typing. And I find it excellent for web surfing from the recliner as well.

I would suggest not having the mindset that tablets are only useful if you use them for significant amounts of work.

I gave up on the idea of doing significant work with my iPad back in 2011 after a few months of using the iPad 1. But I've continued to value them greatly as consumption devices. In addition to pure entertainment activities, this includes a few work related consumption activities like reading PDFs and eBooks, and using various educational apps. I especially value them whilst commuting and when on the couch.

Honestly, I bought my first ever iPad (iPad 2) primarily for reading manga (Japanese comics). I've bought (expensive!) Windows-based tablets and slates prior but the iPad was the first ever tablet I used that actually accomplished the task pretty admirably. The Windows tablets suffered from overheating (or at least temps that could cause 1st degree burns) and short battery life.

With the advent of retina displays and release of more productivity apps, I started using the iPad for more and more tasks. Web browsing, technical PDFs, pro forma tax returns. With the release of MS Excel, I'm even using the iPad now for spreadsheets (creation of simple ones and filling out/minor editing of more complex sheets). I've never been satisfied with Google Docs or 3rd party spreadsheet apps and I have to say, Microsoft did a really good job with Excel for iOS.

Granted, I still can't completely give up my PCs/laptops. I can use the iPad for 80-90% of my tasks but for the 5-10% that I need a PC, there are no substitutions possible.
 
I change my iPhones yearly, but iPads (and MacBooks) IMO have a bit more of a shelf life to them and I find they stay current and the changes year over year aren't as drastic as the iPhone changes every year. Even the S year makes worthy upgrades from even one version older.

Generally I'll skip at least one if not two generations. I went from an iPad 3 to an Air 2, but I went from Air 2 to 12.9 Pro after only a little over a year with the Air 2. I don't anticipate buying the 12.9 Pro 2, as they better not keep Pro 1's from new features that can work on it or I'll be very unhappy.
 
I might upgrade to the next one if there is nice technology improvement, but my air 2 is wonderful. Hell, when I got the iPad 3 it was great. I neverunderstood why people said it is the worst. When I used it I never had problems with it and I still own it today.

The premise of this thread is a little 'flawed' from the get-go.

Certainly within anyone's call to upgrade...but if your iPad does what you need it to, why get a new one indeed?!
 
We still have two iPad minis first gen, an iPad 3 and one iPad Air running and since we use them for browsing mostly, it's all good
 
I put always upgrade, because I'm just a sucker for the newest technology. That being said, if there wasn't a significant (to me) improvement, I'd probably skip a year.

It all depends. My iPad 1 (purchased on day-1) is still in use every day... as a "picture tube" for a vintage TV. 😀 I've loaded it up with vintage movies, TV shows, and commercials that run continuously (jailbroken to allow the video to play even when the screen is off)

Had an iPad 2 and got a iPad Air 2 when it was released. Honestly still love the Air 2. If the next pro wows me I might look into it or get a MacBook.
 
I upgrade every 2 years when the contact expired.....Now that I upgraded to iPad Pro 12.9 from iPad Air 2 last week.
 
I upgraded from iPad 3 to Air 2, then skipped 2016 9.7inch. Am getting the 2017 model 10.5 inch Pro if the rumours become reality

iPad Air 2 replaced iPad 4

iPad 2 - sold
iPad with Retina Display - now with in laws.
iPad 4th Gen - now with in laws.
iPad Air - now with my wife.
iPad Air 2

On each occasion I seen performance degrade year on year or seen a form factor change that urged me to upgrade.

With the Air 2 the form factor bar dual speakers is the same as the Pro and the Air 2 continues to run the latest apps quickly and with great performance. iOS 10 is as smooth as the iOS it came with was, so I've no need to upgrade from the Air 2 yet.

Also I hand my iPads down to people who don't have one in the family, potentially removing a "sale" from Apple inadvertently.

To be honest my interest and excitement in the iPad is waning, possibly due to Apple appearing to not care about it (iOS could still be far better optimised for the tablet).

It's obvious that Apple hasn't materially added anything new in ios10 for the iPad. Refining and improving the split-windows feature is a necessity for starters.

Until more effort on Apple's part is made to improve and enhance functionality on the iPad, I'm going to be equally as slow to buy anything new on the iPad front.

I hope others feel that way too.

It will take more than processor bumps and a nicer screen before I drop $900-$1000 down this well.

iPad 3 (returned within a week as it was so bulky) - I was briefly pulled in to the wonderful world of Nexus tablets.. that is a story for another day!
iPad mini 2 (still have.. used by the young one for youtube etc) - I had an amazing deal at the time for the mini 2 and as I was very impressed with the specs equivalency with the Air I went for it.
iPad Pro 9.7 (current daily driver) - the mini 2 was getting slow after iOS9 so got the Pro once I saw a tempting deal!
I cannot see upgrading anytime soon given how I use my tablets.. perhaps when the performance starts to suffer! Time will tell!
