How often is the AirTag location updated if it’s with an iPhone?

Example someone took dog out which has an AirTag collar on, they have an iPhone. Checking updates were “last seen 20m ago” in a location where I know they’ve been, but why so slow to update location?

I know ours not GPS, but I thought with it being next to an iPhone it would update much faster than that?

If your AirTag is in a busy area surrounded by other iPhones, its location can be updated every one to two minutes. However, if your AirTag is in a secluded area without much foot traffic, its location may never update due to lack of nearby iPhones.

But it was with a iPhone, that’s my question. I thought it would be updated often as it had a “link” to an iPhone.

It was last seen 20m when I checked. I understand if not near an iPhone, iPad, MacOS etc, but it was directly with one, fully updated iOS, an iPhone 14.

Yes you're right.
Must both of devices should have to be paired and connected/linked with your phone.
