Technically I learned now to steer when I was about 3 or 4. My mom would let me sit on her lap and steer our car. She stopped after a few trials because she said I would always try to run into parked cars... :p

But yeah, I learned to drive at 16.

Well, I learnt to drive when I was eight. I got my driver's licence when I was sixteen and then again when I was eighteen. I had to get it again because I lost the first one when I was pulled over for not wearing shoes and not having my licence with me (a requirement for young drivers). I've never spent AU$500 more stupidly.

*Looks across at Derek the Dell and reconsiders*

Not wearing shoes lost your license

The law here's appropriate footwear so the police can choose to book us for thongs (flip flops), barefoot, stilettos*, or whatever pleases them. *Umm... I got booked for barefoot driving. I promise...

Yeah, we drive on the left. Driving in Australia is mundane at best (unless you go to the Northern Territory). There are long straight roads (did I mention they're long) with very little roadside clutter (or anything to look at) yet 100km/h speed limits. A massive proportion of our road fatalities result from drivers falling asleep. :(

i was 15.5 got my permit and learned to drive and got my liscense at 16

however i did sit on my dads lap some when i was 8 and stear the stearing wheel lol :)

I think you live in a beautiful country. Would love to visit.

Ayers Rock
Cairns
Perth
Sydney
Brisbane

And drive through Outback! I hope it's not too hot for you over there at the moment.

Yeah, I love a sunburned country an all that too. :)

If you come through Sydney and need a beer, give me a yell (or a PM). I'm more than happy to extend that to any MacRumors members. :)

My brother and four friends fell asleep in a Ford Falcon driving along one of your boring long roads. They woke up having hit a cow and a stop sign! The car, cow and sign were all write-offs. The photo of the scene is hilarious, dead cow, dead car and stop sign at 30degrees and nothing else as far as the eye could see.

You say learned???? Weird :D

It's an unfortunate change to American English since the 1960s. Many words were changed for no good reason, so that they differed from everyone else's English. The Northeastern U.S.A. still uses a lot of the old words, though. However, to really confuse people, some past participles still are written the old way.

Is it a wonder that people in the U.S.A. have more knowledge of driving than English? :D

Isn't learned the adjective used to describe a dude who's learnt heaps of stuff? A well learned person is generally a well educated person. Learnt is then the past participle of to learn. :)

My first driving experience was when I was 10 years old. I drove an F-550 dump truck. I have also driven...

- 1992 Cozy Coupe (hahah)
- Mac Dump Truck (dad's friend)
- 1999 Mercedes E300 Diesel (uncles)
- 1999 Chevy Suburban LT (my dads old car)
- 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee (sisters/mom's old car)
- 2003 BMW X3 (moms old car- long story as to why it is gone now)
- 2003 Land Rover Discover SE-7 (dad's car)
- 2004 Altima 3.5l (uncles)
- 2005 Touareg V8 (mom's new car)

Other vehicles
- 198x Toro Tractor- 11hp (grandpa's)
- 30' Grady white (uncle's boat)
- 25' Grady white (uncle's old boat)
- John Deere GT235e (our tractor)
- John Deere LT133 (uncle's tractor)
- John Deere 160 (friends tractor- said in shed for 10 year and we got it started one day LOL)

My favorite car of all time is the cozy coupe though.

I take my 3rd driving test in 8 days time... or so. My math isn't what it used to be :p

This time i'll bloody well pass as well.

I failed the 1st time because my teacher was rubbish, fair enough. So I got a new teacher. The 2nd time I was edging out of a junction... parked cars EVERYWHERE... the ******* stamps on the dual-control brake when he sees another car coming - before I even get a chance to! I didn't think to argue the toss at the time, but I guess if I'd shown him where my feet were he'd have let me off... Bah!

They seem to make it so hard to pass in the UK! No?

I remember a TV show we had out here about UK driving instructors a few years back. I forget the name but it was possibly the worst show ever. The process seemed a little more trying than what I had to go through. :)
