How expensive is this? I have about 1TB that I'd want backed up this way...
$5/month... less if you pay in advance for a year.

1TB will take awhile for the initial upload though... I'm only using 100GB and it took a week or so. They have recently increased the upload cap they have on traffic for MozyHome.

My big problem is that everything is in my house. I will have to find a storage place on line or keep a copy in one of my sisters homes, in another state. Maybe I'll get a storage box somewhere?

Maybe you could just get a fire-safe lock box for your own home? I've got one in my closet with the deed to my house, etc.

Do you encrypt your files or do you just upload them bare?

They are encrypted with Mozy's key; you can generate your own if you'd like, but you're SOL if you lose it.

From the mozy.com website:
# 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
# 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.

They also give you a free 2GB account so you can try it before you decide to pay.

That's so cool. It looks tempting, I will try it out. You said you have 100GB uploaded is that only music or do you have movies as well?

I have about 2TB of movies (mostly now backup on DVD), I don't know whether Mozy will back that up? I have a 25/25 Mbit connection so speed is no problem :D

Has anyone backup alot of data on Mozy?

I only backup my digital purchases (iTunes, Amazon, etc), iPhoto libraries, and a couple of application folders (website, iBank data). They claim there is no limit to the amount you upload if you have a paid account. They do rate limit the upload speeds, but they did recently increase it.

I tested downloading and restoring a file and it worked pretty well.

25mb DL&UL?!??! im impressed. i have 20mb/1mb lol. so sad. (and i payy $100 per month)

im really fond on this backing up online idea, the only reason why i cannot do it is because my ISP only give me 25gb per month, and i have about 2tb to backup. so i am not even going to attempt it.

I do have empathy for you. It's really sad. I know exactly how you feel, I lived in the UK and Internet is expensive especially the fact that you get asynchronic connections.

I hate when ISP's limit the total downloads:( glad I don't live in UK anymore

Even Mobile broadband is expensive there in UK.

I pay 299DKK here in Denmark (unlimited) (about 25 pounds sterling, or $60) for a 25/25mb we also have 40/40mb for 600DKK. Sweden is far more cheaper they have like 100/100Mbit connections for around 100 or 200 SWE KR.

But doesn't Australia suck, I mean I've heard all Apple gear is expensive?

yes limiting total downloads is the biggest annoyance in the world. the ISP i am with also counts uploads to your total downloads.

uumm mobile broadband in australia will cost you (at least) $50AUD for 5gb at about 256kb. its extremely expensive, and not even worth trying because it is that slow.

yous have a 40/40?? our fastest is only ADSL2+, in pretty much 97% of australia there is only ADSL (8mb) and only the big cities with cable could probably get cable, which isnt much better than ADSL2+. our internet in this country is pretty much run by a private owned ISP, they own all the rights to the lines or something, so charge all the little companies that want to get started aswell. not to mention that there is so much copper, and not enough fibre.

never in my wildest dreams would i be able to get 100/100. while ...eerrr.. downloading i see people uploading at the craziest speedes, it makes me SO jealous that im stuck downloading at 30kbps because i cant upload.

Well the European Union has actively been encouraging ISPs to invest in fibre therefore the prices are becoming alot cheaper. Sweden is probably alot more technologically advanced they have fibre all over the place.

At least you love where you live:D I would love to live in central London if I had the money, but generally the food is soo bad and its so unclean.:D

huh?? i live in australia.

Ran out of room on the 320GB external, so I purchased a 750GB external today. Now the collection can continue to grow.

Hey...
my movie collection is nowhere near the size of your guy's!
I unfortunately live in Germany and am building a base of american Series...i get them on the internet BUT most of them are .avi or even .rmvb!!!
Any tips on how to convert them to mp4 for free??? I read about visualhub but I'm just not willing to pay the price!
And if possible could someone maybe elaborate on holding the option key when importing to itunes? I didn't quite get that...

Thanks

Just start recently, but haven't started to use metax yet. About to download it now. Just got to get my favorite movie on my machine though, Raging Bull, its freaking insane!

Pretty low file size what bitrate you using ?

Maybe that's why my movies don't look too great:confused:

What I'm doing is is taking my avi file (there all roughly about 700mb) and dragging them into Visual Hub. Once in Visual Hub I select the iTunes option, check off H.264 encoding, and finally set the quality to "go nuts".

I'm I doing something wrong?

Don't have a screenshot handy (at work right now), but I've been using MetaX to add the basic info (title, year, genre, rating, etc...) and adding the covers. I also went back through all my older videos and added covers to them. I don't bother with the direct/actor information.

Been doing the same for TV shows, adding the DVD covers when available.
