I will tell you that these are all DivX/XviD rips. I use MPEG Streamclip to save them into a MOV container and then import into iTunes.

you know... you could just download movie2itunes and not have to convert anything.. it creates a shortcut that has a .mov extension on the end and imports that into iTunes, iTunes allows it to play and its all done :) no converting needed.

Thanks so much for all the info! At first I was using the iPod Hi-Res because I saw on the net that it would look good on the iPod and TV, but tried the Universal Preset yesterday and it looks GREAT. Definitely worth the extra few hundred megs. If only I could get subtitles to work in Handbrake, I'd be a happy camper. Tried converting "Severance" (fun horror, btw!) yesterday and the first scene is with two foreign girls talking with English subtitles, but I can never get them to show up, and I've tried 3 times. I've clicked every permutation of "Forced Subtitles", "Autoselect", "English", etc, but it never works. They are only in that scene, but...

yes universal will be the best of all worlds :) you cant go wrong

hmm thats confusing about the subtitles, normally i just select the language and it works! i cant help you there sorry. try the latest version of handbrake though (its a bit unstable but still works great) here.. maybe that will fix it?

p.s. congrats on the 1000th post :p

I finally finished my collection and went to do a batch in MetaX.... ruined like 15 movies out of the 50 I had queued up. Hasn't ever done that with TV shows or single movies at a time.

Very lame.

hmm ok i know this isnt really the right spot for it, but i am converting a BluRay rip directly to a DVD image using VisualHub, the conversion goes fine however it automatically selects the German language of the movie, how on earth do i select Track2 !?!?!?!

It does do it occasionally for me, usually if the file has already been tagged in some way. I set MetaX to put a copy of the file in the trash before tagging, so there is a backup if it messes it up. I then check the video still plays by opening it in QT before adding it to iTunes.

Using DVD Cases In iTunes??

Hi all, been having a look at all your collections... fantastic!! Noticed a DVD case that some have been using as icons for their movies in Finder, but does anyone know how those same cases can be used in iTunes?? The file is a psd file (pictured below) :)

Yes, i've also had a few "issues" with MetaX ruining some movies files when i tried to add an extra chapter marker. Gave up and ended up going back to Lostify for just the basics :)

That is basically what MPEG Streamclip does. All it does is pass-thru everything into a MOV container (MOV can hold XviD/DivX and AC3). There is no converting that is done... Just saving the media in a different container that is iTunes friendly. It is also nice because you don't have a bunch of short clips with shortcuts to a bigger file, the whole movie is contained in one file. Give it a shot!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to organize an iTunes library carrying two of every movie; one formatted for my TV the other for my iPhone?

If you're using Handbrake, you can convert using the Apple Universal preset which'll play on both devices, but the file size is big so you don't get many on the iPhone.

For the films where I've done two conversions, one for AppleTV and one for iPhone, I've changed the tag data of the phone version so it becomes a TV show, where the series name is "iPhone movies" and the episode name is the Movie title. This keeps it tidy on my AppleTV and iTunes, I just have to use a playlist to put the movies I want on the iPhone.

However, if anyone has a better way of doing it I'd be interested in hearing it.

You could use Subler to tag one as HD (even though it isnt), and assign them both the same cnID so they appear as one entry in your iTunes library.

ahh yes definately sounds like a better alternative to the program i linked. nice job!

Just thought I would add to this thread - like to keep my movies well organised, tagged and in the grid view.

Second screenshot shows the affect of Subler and what NightStorm is talking about - 2 files, 1 entry in iTunes. I only do it for my Blu-Ray rips though, 1 file for Apple TV, 1 for iPod/iPhone. If it's a DVD i do a universal rip.

Throw in a couple of Romance movies as well to keep the wife happy :D

Maybe having two library's? You can create a library for your tv, have that on computer "a". Then have the one that connects to your iphone/ipod load library "b" on computer "b". That is of course if you have two computers. Or if you have one computer, just have two library's and when you fire up iTunes, hold down the "Alt" key I think, and it will ask you which library do you want to load. (For some reason I think there is another key to hold down for picking a library from iTunes, can't remember it right now thou.)

For me, VideoDrive (www.aroona.net) is still the best solution. I download all my videos (mostly AVI) in a folder named "inbox". This folder is actually a "hot folder", and as soon as a video arrives, VideoDrive is launched and imports it in iTunes. This process is completely automated.

These are my settings:

1) The folder "inbox" is a hot folder: in VideoDrive Preferences panel, go to the Hot Folder tab, select the folder you want to turn into a hot folder.

2) Go to the queue tab and select the second option to handle the import queue (all your vids are added to that queue when they arrive). This is important, becausy this option makes sure the video is requeued if it's not downloaded yet.

3) While importing, the videos are moved to my external disk and organized in subfolders. This setting is on the import tab. Don't forget this step, otherwise your video files stay in the inbox forever.

4) My import method is method 2 (Reference movies). This is the same as what Movie2iTunes does.

5) The metadata is set to not "ask for confirmation" so that the metadata is automatically downloaded in the background. The names of my video files are not always clear, but VD does a good job in still loading the correct metadata.

My only problem I had with this whole setup is now fixed in version 1.10.1. When an error occurred, the error window would block the process until you clicked the message away. But now, this is finally fixed too. :)

The only disadvantage I still have is that the artwork is pulled from amazon, and the quality is definitely ok, but not fantastic. The developer promised to add new sources a while ago, so if they add that too, I'm happy.;)

For me, the whole automated process is priceless because starting to rename files, converting them, tagging them, it's just a whole hassle I can't be bothered with. I guess some other tools have better results or more options for a particular job (like Handbrake for conversions) but VideoDrive offers one solution from start 'till finish and that's why I stick with it.

If you are only interested in the bare minimum you are right and VideoDrive is a feasible alternative, but otherwise I don't think that it can stand up.

A "hot folder" is no more than a folder action, which can be used with any app. A few folder action scripts are also installed with iFlicks and offer you the same functionality and can be customized.
iFlicks also pulls complete and high quality metadata and artwork for you. Even actors, directors, content rating, hd tag and so on are written to the movie file (pretty much anything that can be edited with tools like MetaX plus a few extras). The new beta even adds compatibility with genius and conversion using the same high quality codecs Handbrake uses.

Please don't get me wrong. I don't want to bash on VideoDrive or anything. Just letting you now that there might be other and more complete solutions out there.

How do you use Video Playlists? As far as I know, when you add videos to a playlist in iTunes, the iPhone doesn't recognize the video files when you Sync.

Hi all,

I am getting into ripping DVD TV Shows and movies. I am currently using Handbrake. (I may try Mac the Ripper then Handbrake to see if the process is faster.) Here are my questions"

(1) If I do not want to stream, is it possible to have identical Itunes Libraries on two external USB Drives connected to two different Apple TV's?

(2) If the answer to question 1 is NO, then does anyone use sapphire? This would allow two USB drives on two separate Apple TV's to have the same movie and TV show collection.

Thanks.

Could someone explain to me how the heck you even use Subler anyway? Do you download it from here? When I download it comes up as a default icon and clicking the app icon in the dock brings up no window.

I'm really interested in deploying this HD-SD feature for my two files per movie setup. (One for iPhone, one for TV.)
