With iPhone XS models getting delivered on Friday 21st, does this also signal the end of any NDAs there might be for iPhone XS reviews? I'm mostly interested to see how it compares to the iPhone X in terms of performance (general use, Face ID speed etc).

For the iPhone X the NDA lifted on the Tuesday before the release date.

So it could be tomorrow, however iOS 12 seems to be out earlier than normal so there’s a chance it could also be earlier.

Apple likes to keep a really tight ship on its products. I wouldn't expect reviews until 24-48 hours prior to September 21.

The embargo is typically lifted on the day (or day before) the release of the phones. So we should start seeing actual reviews Thursday or Friday.

Tim Cook will be on Good Morning America tomorrow morning to talk about the new phones. If I remember correctly, the embargo lifted the same time.
