iPad How the **** do you use this thing??

Yes, that's very likely true. I've had the same version of all those programs since I first got them., (with some minor updates). It's very possible that a new OS could cause something in them to spit the dummy.

I should have said, the drive was recognised, but it had the wrong name. Well, that is, I thought it was the wrong name, but i found out later that it wasn't. I know all my SSDs have insufficient power to work, but this was a powered one. Big Seagate brute of a thing.

I'm going to nab my nephew and pick his brain about iPads. He's a whizkid with them. In person, I'll ask a lot of annoying questions one after the other, and he'll have to tell me where I'm going wrong, hehe..

So what was the problem exactly when the drive had been recognized by the iPad?

I just connected an external 4TB SSD to my iPhone SE2 with a Lightning to USB-A-Adapter. At first I didn't see anything in the Files app. Then I removed it while the Files App was open and connected it again and both partitions were immediately there. No power source needed.

That's not how iPad software is installed, it needs to be obtained from the App Store. Once you do that it will actually install so you can use it. Then there is the issue of how to get video files onto the iPad which is the next discussion

Sorry, I haven't seen that. That's really bad. Sadly I am very sick and can be happy if I am even able to write or read longer texts.

I just remember there was something with VLC and just wondered it even exists for iOS.

I did not normally did not use the Files app myself. All alternatives that existed before had a built in video player, like "Documents" and "GoodReader". I thought files maybe could just play videos too with a QuickTime engine or so...

Seems I have to read the whole thread again.

By the way. A newer version of macOS can also be tested on an external drive and the old version won't be touched. Just the boot-loader on your drive gets updated and maybe the firmware of the Mac, what causes a long beep. You can alway change the startup disk in a booted OS, in Recovery or just holding the option/alt key before booting to choose what disk to boot from.

Every OS needs its own version.

There are many different versions to download if you click on the arrow or symbols. If you had chosen the iOS version or opened the site on your iPad it would have led you to the AppStore automatically. If you just click on download on a PC or Mac then you get the version for Windows or macOS like it's displayed here.

Because of historic reasons around quality control and preventing malware etc, the iPhone and iPad are designed to only accept apps from the App Store. Personally I like the way that works but I am probably in the minority.

There are going to be a few things you'll run into that won't make any sense until you understand the logic behind them and then it will make perfect sense.

Just found this:

"iPhones support external storage devices that are formatted as exFAT, FAT32, FAT, and APFS among others, but they will not read devices with NTFS formatting."

That could be the problem if you use Windows on your main Laptop. NTFS is standard for Windows drives. On macOS at least reading is supported natively. Thought iOS could do that too. Should be no difference for iPadOS.

Well, my good friends, I'm delighted to say that it now works!! I'll tell you how I did it.

My first step was to find my old Belkin powered hub which I had bought aeons ago. Luckily I also found the power adapter for it, and plugged it in.

Next, I dug out one of my old SSDs, erased it, reformatted it to Mac OS Extended, (thanks Adora), and copied my stored mp4 videos to it from another drive.

Then, I plugged my newly formatted SSD into the IN port of the Belkin hub.

Then, using my Lightning to USB cable, I connected the SSD to one of the Out ports on the hub, and from there to my iPad.

Then I held my breath and waited, and voila, the name of the SSD appeared in Files! There they were, all my video files. Then it was just a matter of tapping and holding while I dragged them across to "On My iPad".

I want to thank each and every one of you, for all the time and effort you put into helping me out, it's very much appreciated. Three cheers for MacRumors! 🤩🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
