I need to get in touch with somebody at my local Apple Store for information on how to get my MBP's DVD drive fixed. When I call the store, their service department transfers to AppleCare. I'm under warranty but not phone support, so I assume this call would cost me, which I want to avoid. Is the only other way to get help on fixing my machine to go to the Apple website/retail, and make an appointment? Without talking to a real human being?

You should be able to talk to someone there. Or look in your phone book and find the number.

If the issue does in fact turn out to be covered by warranty, Apple will not charge you for the support call.

Otherwise, make an appointment to take it to your local Apple store. Anybody who answers the phone there won't be able to diagnose your issue over the phone...they'll want to have a genius take a look at it.
