Lion is more than 7 weeks old, its been in development long enough that a public release should be mostly clear of major issues.

Well, most of the *major* issues, have been ironed out. There are TONS of minor ones though. My newest iMac came with SL installed, and after using Lion for the last couple of months, it is nice to have the old cat back. I think I am going to stick with it for a while :)

This is because the retail disk might have come out before the MacBook Pro did. Thus the retail disk would not have the drivers for the MacBook Pro.

Exactly my point: how can you install 10.6 if it came with Lion? If a retail 10.6 disc will not boot or fail when you attempt to install. Not like you can go into Apple and ask to buy a 2011 MacBook Pro 10.6.x... Can be done, just not easily (in all cases)

You can't just install the disk. You have to start with a backup, and then wipe the hard drive. You are doing a clean install after reformating the hard drive. that's the only way.

Use carbon copy cloner or Super Duper to make a usb startable backup drive. You can get a 500 GB drive at Radio Shack for $69. Firewire will cost you more.

I've probably done 100's of clean installs on apple computers since tiger. My 2011 15" MacBook Pro will not allow the installation of 10.6 using a family pack retail disc, wiped drive or not. boots just fine from DVD or fw/USB drive but unless I use a specific 10.6 disc that shipped with a 2011 MBP I got message that "this operating system is not compatible with this system" or something like that. Tried wiping drive, different drive, upgrade to SSD, PRAM reset and nothing worked until I found a friend with 2011 MBP 10.6 DVD. Must be something special with a Lion shipping model that is trying to prevent the downgrade.

You're mad that a 7 week old OS doesn't have every bug ironed out and third parties haven't gotten off their asses to update applications?

You'd be hopping mad if you bought a brand new car which was riddled with problems but hey, the nice guys at the dealership will give you as much time as you need to fix them. Or if your dose of antibiotics caused your cholesterol meds not to work. I don't understand why you feel the need to cut software developers quite so much slack. Dare I utter the words Windows XP?

I did the same .... SL is a definitely upgrade from Lion.
