Let it be noted that turn-by-turn directions only work on the cellular models of the iPad. I guess it makes sense but it would be nice for when i have my Verizon hotspot in my car with me. If I'm mistaken someone please tell me how to activate this feature in the iPhone 5 style.

How do you expect turn-by-turn navigation to work when the Wi-Fi only iPad doesn't have a GPS chip?

That would be because the Cellular Chip on the iPad is what contains the GPS Chip. No GPS chip -- No GPS Directions. The newest iPod has a separate GPS chip so it can do turn-by-turn.

That's what I had thought

I don't. However the hotspot I have does. Just saying. Maybe that info could be shared

what bugs me about this as a 4 user is that the voice recognition already works for this phone so why not get it say "turn here" "left turn ahead" i'm not asking for street names but having to look up and down is slightly dangerous

It would have been nice if the numbers updated to show the distance as you get closer to the turns.

The mapquest app (free app) has been given me turn by turn navigation for a couple years now. On my 3GS!!!!

I remember some people saying that iPhones were sending their GPS coordinates to Mobile Hotspot tethered iPads, but only once a minute or so (no real-time GPS).

Right at the point where I get a job that I'm probably going to need to take a bus to, they release this stupid update, unbeknownst to me there is no public transportation instructions anymore like wtf....

I haven't try out the turn-by-turn thing yet...

Gotta try that feature soon... See how well it works. I can't wait!

Turn -By -Turn

Last week I used Maps to direct me 400 miles to the other side of the country. I input my postcode whilst on wifi and off we went. I also used an updated Tom Tom to compare speed, maps and traffic service.

In my case maps on the iPhone 4s were more acurate believe it or not. Congestion showed up on maps before on TT and it re-routed before TT had worked out I was of course.

What was smart is that when you enter your location before you set off, it downloaded a section of the maps around my route incase of any detours and worked fine even when I did not have any network signal.

Waze is much better and it works just fine on the 4. It's crowd sourced turn-by-turn navigation with voice, re-routing and real-time traffic. It avoids traffic really well giving you the best route and even updating it on the fly as traffic changes. And it's free!

So true, great news! You get free updated iOS every year, bad news: if you model is over 1 year, you get the worthless version of the update

So without turn-by-turn every things else are worthless. Drama-queen much?

Good news!

My iPhone 4 makes me feel so obsolete. :(

Me too, especially next to my wife's 4S. Of course, that should change in under 9 hours. :D

So I thought that iOS6 was supposed to bring updated ETA on Maps during the drive? My iPhone 4 does not have this however my friend has iPhone 4s and said it is on there. Is that correct that it will be on 4s and 5 but not the 4?

Also, are we not getting traffic info on Maps? I see construction and accident notifications but none of the green/yellow/red lines we are all accustomed to seeing.

I saw traffic there. And that was Wednesday at 5 pm eastern, so not sure it is crowd sourced just from iOS 6

Surely you're not going to need a mapping app to figure out how to get to work every day? I would think you could figure out the route online one time and then take that...

Navigon vs. iOS6 MAPS

Aside from cost and the fact Navigon is a third party app, I've used it for over a year and it's absolutely incredible. How does it compare with iOS6 MAPS from a features and usability perspective?

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/navigon-north-america/id321506742?mt=8

Notable features of Navigon which impressed me (noting some are fee based):

  • Course options - fastest, shortest, etc.
  • Speaks directions and distances - compatible with Blue Tooth audio in car, iPod music in background
  • Download latest maps - pick which states you want optionally
  • 3D texture mapped/panoramic display in both day and night modes with skyline view
  • Realism - i.e. graphics show you going through a tunnel, over a bridge looking down
  • Road signs that look exactly like real highway road signs - pretty amazing
  • Real time traffic integration
  • Automatic re-calculation when missing a turn
  • Lanes you can be in prior to turn
  • Landmark integration (restaurants, gas, museums, whatever)
  • Speedometer
  • Distance and time to destination
  • "Take me home" - remembers home GPS, get the route there with 1 button.
Just to name a few.

The iPhone is mounted/charged in a holder in my car with a flexible arm, the app is very stable in my experience with it.

Yeah that header is nice but last night maps took me down a dead end street. It sucks. No discussion.
