How time machine handle multiple volumes

I have two hard drives in my macbook pro. 256 GB SSD and a 750 GB HDD in the optibay. I noticed my time machine started to backup and included the 750 GB HDD. Does it create a separate backup file for that volume so that I can restore individually or does it just create one back of both drives and you need to restore both?
