I know one would think to just go to messages and toggle iMessage off but that didn't work. I need a way to lock down my child's phone so there can only be calls and texts to and from a few numbers and limit the apps allowed. I planned to do this using screentime to put it in downtime all day and only allow phone, messages and maybe a few other apps. I was going to use Verizon's family app to limit who can calls and texts can be made to and received from, however that doesn't cover iMessage. I toggled it off in settings and after some testing it was back on.

After turning off I texted the phone and it went thru as sms. Sent a few back and forth and thought it was done. About an hour later I went to test again and it showed iMessage where I type my message and sure enough it went through as an iMessage. I went to settings and it was back on.

If this isn't possible I'm going to resort to buying a basic flip phone but would rather not have to spend the money.

Settings/message/send & receive tap on your AppleID and sign out. Unfortunately this will shut iMessage and text messages down completely..
