I have a 6th Gen Apple AirPort Extreme, a Pioneer av receiver, and I recently bought the Bose Soundtouch 20. I will be returning the Bose, because its expensive just to use the airplay function on it and it has a 5 second delay in sound when going out of pause. I have been looking at the Apple Airport Express and Apple TV for Airplay. Which device do you recommend for only airplay audio streaming? Also I will not use any of the video streaming apps on the Apple TV, because I have the Roku 3.

I suggest you check out the section about AirPort Express in this post:

I can not tell you by heart what DAC does Apple use in the :apple:TV but for the price you pay for video circuitry in the :apple:TV (and you don't want to use it for streaming video anyway), you can get a WiFi basestation in Express, that can make it useable also autonomously, in the field.

PS Besides video streaming apps inside :apple:TV you can use it as a wireless display adapter via AirPlay Mirroring, i am not sure if you can do the same using Roku.

The main upside to the Airport Express over the AppleTV for audio is that it puts out a 16/44.1 signal, while the AppleTV converts all streams to 48khz. In other words, the Airport Express is bit perfect with a typical Redbook CD standard and the AppleTV isn't.

The downside to the Airport Express it has issues with some DACs when you use the Optical output. I have used Airport Express with several DACs and have never run into an issue, but something to be aware of if you have issues with the beginning of songs that are dropping.
