How to add iPad “phone number” to apple ID

I have an iPhone and an iPad. My iPhone is used for my job, as well as for personal things. I have an iPad that has service with another carrier (Verizon through work on phone, AT&T for iPad - the old unlimited program that started with the first generation iPad). My Apple ID uses my phone number. The iPad has a different number associated with the SIM, but when I go into Settings, there is not an option to use that number to send and receive messages on the iPad -messages are to/from the number associated with the Apple ID and the phone. I have tried to add the iPad number to my Apple ID, but it has to verify by sending a message, and I can’t get a message at that number until it is associated with the ID. So I can’t verify it. Circular problem.

What I am trying to do, for privacy reasons, is to be able to send and receive messages on my phone, for work, using my phone number, and on my iPad, using the number associated with the iPad SIM. Even though I own my phone, since I have to give some control of the phone to my company in order to ensure security (for patient information - I’m in healthcare), I am concerned that management has the ability to read text messages on my phone. I don’t care if they read my work related texts, but not my private ones with friends and family.

Do I just need to get a second Apple ID and set that up on my iPad, and link it to the number associated with the SIM? If I can avoid a second Apple ID, I would prefer that, but I’m not sure it’s possible.

Then how do I get the number associated with my ID, if I need to confirm it with a code they sent, which I can’t receive because the number is not associated with my ID?

You can't use the iPad's phone number for SMS or iMessage. The carriers don't allow it to work that way.

I’ve been able to get iPad texting to work briefly “using an external SIM card”. And it always fails after a day or so.

It’ll work at first, cellular data, and cellular texting from that number affiliated with the sim being used. But then the texts will change after a while, saying they are being sent from a email address instead of the number.

I’ve had it working. But, it isn’t reliable.

The ios always figures it out. And messes things up. I wish apple would let us text from our iPads data numbers.

Also, the SIM card that I used was from a cell phone before.

You cannot text from a iPad sim, or iPad data plan.

I just gave up on it, and I use my built in iPad Apple sim on AT&T pre-paid plan.

I don’t think you can use a data-only number to receive SMS or receive a phone call. iPad itself does not have those features either. I get it, you want to use it for iMessage. But iMessage also works for email address.

And, if you are concerning company spying on your private information, buy a second hand iPhone 5s or something and use it for work. That way, you will not need to worry about leaking personal information to your employer or risk your iPhone being wiped remotely.

This is not possible. Data only SIM cards can’t be used as traditional messaging or call services. The carriers block them from using that frequency.
