When I try to add a photo to a contact, the only options I get is to use my camera, upload Photo Stream, Faces or use the camera. However what I usually WANT to do is simply browse for a photo and add it.

To me that seems like the most typical and obvious was to add a file... am I missing something?

If you are browsing photos just use copy/paste.

In Safari, right click on image and do "Copy Image".

Then, select the contact's image area, cancel out of dialog box, leaving the circle selected (ie. light blue). Cmd-v to paste the image. Adjust save and save.
