I wish I could get rid of the Dropbox menu bar icon. Anyone know how? Google is just full of complaints about being unable to remove it -- no solutions about how to get rid of it without uninstalling the application.

I also recommend Bartender. I've been using it for years and it works pretty good most of the time. I have a few apps that act weird sometimes, or when upgrading the OS there are sometimes new requirements to get it working on a new version because of macOS security problems, but the developers is usually pretty timely at fixing issues and pushing out regular updates and provides documentation on how to fix issues. It's worth it to have my menu bar cleaned up and still usable, such as temporarily showing icons that have changed their status so you can see and the ability to tuck them away into a seconday bar. You also don't have to go digging for the setting to turn off an item, and you can use it to hide things like Spotlight if you use a keyboard shortcut like I do. It's kinda ridiculous that Apple hasn't built this into the OS yet, especially considering how many Mac users I see who have a cluttered mess at the top that sometimes takes more than half of their menubar space. Apple usually doesn't like their computers to have a cluttered mess in the UI.

I would like to move the sidebar icon, and have tried the tip offered above (holding down the command key and the left mouse button to drag) but it does not budge. I don't know why Apple would have a problem with people managing their menu bar for their own convenience. Oh well. Just another trifle to live with I guess.

Adding the Display icon via
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras
did not work for me.

When I tried adding the Display icon.
It did add.
However, as soon as I clicked on it , it disappeared again.
Details are here:

My menu bar and dock have disappeared. Anybody know how to turn it back on? I’m using big sur as my iOS. Having issues with my trackpad, keys stokes not working, any help?

So, I already knew this - but... I wanted to say "Thank you!" to the author for writing a succinct, informative tutorial rather than an recording an eight-minute-long YouTube video!

Seriously, I get so tired of searching for information on some subject where the answer could be presented in 50 words of prose, SNIP!
Oh, much worse are the articles like this that start with 2 pages of malarkey before they get to the point. To wit "If you're a Mac user, you know how easy their operating system is. What take 5 keystrokes in other OS's is a mere click on a Mac. One example is the Menu Bar. That's that thin strip at the top of your display that holds..." and on and on and on. I say, give us the answer first then you can put your two pages of digital masturbation at the end. I maintain the 2 pages of baloney are their so the writer can justify their paycheck - it has nothing to do with writing a quality, helpful article.

Welcome to the internet. 🙄

The macOS menu bar is a great place for quickly accessing system and application functions using menu extras or "menulets", but it can get cluttered pretty quickly as more and more icons vie for a space there.

If the corner of your Mac's screen is fast becoming an eyesore, here are some quick and simple actions you can perform to bring order to the chaos, plus a few additional tips for making the most of Apple's menu bar extras.

How to Rearrange Icons in the Menu Bar

Plenty of menu bar icons offer useful shortcuts to app and system functions, and may take up permanent residence on your screen. But left to their own devices, the arrangement of said icons is likely to become haphazard. Fortunately, re-organizing them is simple, once you know how to do it.

  1. Hold down the Command (?) key.
Hover your mouse cursor over the icon you want to move.
Holding down the left mouse button, drag the icon into your preferred position on the menu bar. Other icons will step aside to make space for it.
Let go of the left mouse button.

Note that the Notifications icon in macOS is designed to sit in the far right corner of the menu bar and cannot be moved elsewhere.
