Hi everyone.

I purchased a few months ago an all-in-one printer, one I had read decent reviews about regarding photography printing. The printer is the CANON TS8352.

Now, I am trying to have a custom colour profile made for this printer. Long story short, I need to print a colour chart but avoiding the printer using its own colour management software. I have foloowed detailed instructions regarding downloading the correct drivers, install them etc.

The problem I have is that even after downloading and installing, when I add the printer and I try to tell it which software to use, I don't have the option to select "AirPrint" or Canon's dedicated drivers package. I only get the latter, which should be good..... Except that when I select that only option, the printer displays the following:

TS8300 series blabla....- AirPrint.

I have tried everything. Removed the printer. Fresh install with printer unplugged. There's not much more I can think of, if you could help me I'd be very grateful

Are you directly connected (USB) or via network?

I am not savvy enough to know or understand how does iOS organize the drivers, it does give me the option to look elsewhere for the software and I tried, but I haven't got the foggiest where to find it or, indeed, if I can find it.

You could try switching Wi-Fi to 'Off' to circumvent that channel (and possibly open other(s)).

For a second I thought you might be on to something here but then I remembered our ISP changed our router, never bothered setting up the printer's Wi-Fi again.

Is this iOS or macOS? you mentioned iOS at some point. What kind of color profile are you creating? meaning what's the source?

Have you turned off Wi-Fi options directly on the printer itself (not from the router)? I suppose you could just disconnect your router and see if it helps any there too 😁

My apologies, it is macOS indeed.

It's not me who's cretaing the colour profile, I am trying to have it made by the same guys I get my photo paper from.

I have not turned off the Wi-Fi options but why should that be a problem considering I am on a different network altogether from the one I set the printer up on?

I think as long as you keep the wi-fi option turned on, it will keep attempting to connect and prioritize Air Print. Wouldn't it be a worthwhile test to turn it off?

I absolutely will, thanks for the advice.

So, I just did that, I turned off every wireless option on the printer. I switched it off, removed the printer from the list, re-installed the drivers, waited until it would tell me to switch it on and we're back to square one, it gets directly installed as AirPrint. I remove it from the list, add it again, hoping it would give me the choice between AirPrint and "Canon TS8300 series" but no, the latter is the only choice I get. I select it and, sure enough, it figures as "Canon TS8300 series - AirPrint".

Also this probably involves disabling Bonjour, but I don't have experience doing that so don't want to advise you. I took a look at the TS8352 manual, which mentions that Bonjour can be disabled in the LAN settings. I'm hoping someone else will chime in to give you more details and whether you should change that setting to accomplish what you hope to concerning the color profile. Again, this may not be the right direction to take.

Here's an Apple support article about Bonjour you can read for background:

It is worth noticing I am just noticing the driver was last updated on 19 March 2020 for the TS 8300 series, for osMac 10.5.

I did do an updated search, I have found a printer that belongs to the TS8300 series but, alas, when I try to download the drivers I get this message:

"There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

Would it seem I am stuck with whatever macOS considers it is what I need?

"Canon TS8300 series - AirPrint"

Seems a pretty generic label; one driver probably covers quite a few models (as I have seen with other hardware).

I am curious as to why you do not want to install the driver as suggested by the OS, as it is required for the OS to communicate with your printer . . . ?

Try re-installing the "TS8300 series - AirPrint" driver to make sure that Mac OS can actually talk with your printer, then open the ColorSync Utility to work with your Profiles:

Most macOS printer drivers are AirPrint drivers instead of CUPS drivers. You'll have to delete the printer and reinstall its driver, but don't let it autoselect. You'll need to find the CUPS driver. I ran into the same issue with my Brother MFC-L8900CDW that I wanted to customize things with.

Many small Canon AIO printers have no option to use a driver other than AirPrint (on a Mac).
Like this:

The Canon G550/G620/G650 has the same issue.

As a result none of these printers are recommended for "serious" photo printing on a Mac.

I don't know your particular printer, but it may well have the same issue.

I suggest ask in the following forum - if anyone knows if it can be done, they likely will:

I don't want to use the AirPrint driver because it removes some control options on the Print dialogue. I want to disable Canon's colour management, but that is imposible using the AirPrint drivers.

This video illustrates it much better than I can:

You'll need to find the CUPS driver.
This is what I don't know how to do, I haven't got a clue where does Mac store the installed drivers.

This is what I fear. I did some research before purchasing the printer, I didn't want to get a professional grade one, but I did search for one that would yield good results. The problem is that at that time I wasn't aware of the need of customized colour profiles, that one is on me unfortunately.

I will do that, many thanks, it's a great idea.

Ah! I understand, now. thx

I hope you get it to work :)

unfortunately, according to canon, this printer is only supported through AirPrint (no cups driver available).

you may want to investigate the epson equivalent or step up to the canon pro-300 or greater which still have dedicated non-air print drivers available
