So I have an iphone 3g with the original 2.0 software, and want to update to 2.1.
I can sync my music / contacts etc. but there is a cydia app called "Aptbackup" and it backs up all the cydia apps you installed so when you do the "backup" option in iTunes, it will back up all the cydia apps along with all the other settings.
However, the problem is, iTunes refuses to do a backup without upgrading to the 2.1 software. I would do that, but then I would loose all my data (including cydia apps) so that wouldn't work. I've tried deleting my old backups and syncing it, yet the iphone won't backup?
Any suggestions on how to get it to backup without doing a software update to 2.1?
By the way its iTunes 8.

When the iPhone is connected click on download update only (not download and install). Everytime it will ask you about installing the update but just click no.
