you legend.....just saved me hours of work...i've been doing every subfolder individually until now....tip of the hat to you sir...BTW, love the keyboard navigation post too....

Hi.
I'm having a similar problem, suddenly and on both my macbook pro, and my iMac.

it's not the "locked" checkbox, it's the padlock icon, and when I unlock it on an individual file, as soon as I close and reopen the "get info" or the Inspector, it's locked again.

also, the macbook, having had battery issues for some time now, suddenly holds NO charge at all, and if I leave it asleep (plugged in) for more than a half hour or so, it won't wake up, but rather reboots entirely.

the iMac is running 10.7.2.
I just updated the macbook to el Capitan in hopes that that might help. I tried to upgrade to Sierra and it says "this version of macOS 10.12 cannot be installed on this computer. when I click "Learn More", nothing happens at all.

I've tried some of the Terminal commands, and it tells me that I don't have permission.

Help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am having the same issue on Windows 7. can you please give a solution for it.

When the lock is dimmed, then the disk might be in a format that your version of MacOS can't write to. This means you can't change anything on that disk, you can only read from it.

If you do a "Get Info" on the disk, what does it show next to "Format:" under the "General" pane near the top of the Get Info window?

To confirm that you're looking at the info for the disk, the first line in the "General" pane should show "Kind: Volume". If it shows "Kind: Folder" instead, then you need to choose the disk volume the folder is located on.

Its a volume. Here is the info on this screen shot and a couple of folders inside this external disk. All the paddle lock are dimmed

The padlock on the disk's Get Info is not dimmed. It should be clickable. Please try clicking it and see what happens. You already have read/write permission on this disk.

Of the 4 Get Info windows shown in the second screen shot, the padlock in the active window is not dimmed (the window at the left, for "15-211 Pub Elegant Wdding Mtl.ai"). Again, it should be clickable. Please try clicking it and see what happens.

The remaining 3 Get Info windows aren't active, i.e. they aren't the front window. This means that some of their controls (such as the padlock) will be dimmed until the window is activated. Click the window to bring it to front, and the padlock should undim and become clickable.

Another of the "dim on inactive" controls is the Gear icon (lower left). Its dimmed state should change as the window comes to front or another window is brought to front.

Note that some controls in a non-front window WILL be clickable, such as the checkboxes. This means that if you click one of these while bringing the window to front, the control will activate.

You already have read/write permission on all 4 files shown, and all of them are unlocked (see the Locked checkbox), so it's unclear to me what you want to accomplish by clicking the padlock.

Yes I can unlock them individually no problem - But we want to unlock (over 125 files) in one shot. That is the problem.
When I do :
5. Cmd-A to select all
6. Opt-Cmd-I to bring up the single pane inspect
It shows me the multiple files and/or folder that I have chosen but can’t unlosk at that stage ???
Example of 6 files that need to unlock

The window in that screen shot is not the front window. I can tell because its title bar is light gray, and several controls are dimmed.

Click that window to bring it to front, and the padlock should undim. As a double-check, the gear icon should also undim.

EDIT

It looks like you have to click that window in a specific place to bring it to front. Its title-bar is one place, as is the text showing how many items ("6 Items"). Many other places, when clicked, will NOT bring the window to front.

You are so right !!!
Thank you very much for your help. What a relief. Being an apple user for a long time and I never quite understood this locking issue. Thanks again.
Never too old to learn. Are you a graphic artist ?
