How to black a Phone Number?

In order to block a phone number, do I have to create a contact and the block it or can I just block a number?

If you are on iOS7..just click the (i) mark and scroll down to block.

But I have a number I want to block before it calls me. How can I do this or do I have to wait for them to call/text?

add the number to your address book and the option will be at the bottom of the contact page.

Dial the number but end the call before it even connects. It will now be in your recent calls. Tap the round blue 'i' icon next to it and select to block it. Then delete it from your recent calls list of you want (by swiping left to right on it and tapping delete).

You can also go to Settings>Phone>Blocked and add a new number.
