worth repeating.

And make sure you have some basic toiletries and a change of underwear in your carry-on bag just in case your checked luggage gets lost

don't buy too much water though......a lot of international airports do a final security check at the boarding gate and you might not be get to take those bottles of water onboard

really? never happened to me.
although i doubt anyone would need much more than 1 bottle. it's not such a long flight and you CAN get water on board

Happens some times on the return to the USA; just happened to my nephew 3 weeks ago returning from Amsterdam. It's happened several times to me too. It's annoying because you've gone thru security and passport checks and all, so you figure you are now good to buy a bottle of water for the plane....and then you get to your the and find they're checking everybody's carry-on and making you leave any bottled fluids bigger than 3oz

As someone who travels quite frequently........just remember when getting your flights home, customs takes A LOT longer coming back than it does leaving.

Also, do the TSA pre-approved list, its pretty easy and then you don't have to do stupid stuff like take your laptop out and take your shoes off and you get your own line.

Like people have said, don't argue with them, just be polite and do what they say and it'll go by fairly painlessly.

Not sure what class you are sitting in, but if you are in coach and are also packing and checking a bag, which I assume you are since you are going for 2 months............get a freezer bag and fill it with those little bottles of booze you get at the grocery store. As long as you can stuff them in the alotted size bag, you are all good. I always fly coach unless I'm going to be in the air longer than 4 hrs and I always bring bottles of booze with me. Sometimes they'll be a bit bitchy about dark liquor, they've taken Jack Daniels away from me..........but most are fine with it, a lot of the times TSA guys will make jokes with me about it.

Good luck! Have fun! Everything go ok?

Everything went great, airport security really is nothing to worry about. Barcelona, Venice, and Rome have all been a blast. I'll be in Rome until August. There is definitely a lot I will take from living in Europe. :)

There's penicillin for that now.

Rome is amazing. Lived there for a little over 5 months while studying abroad. Got to travel to a lot of places in Italy and Europe. Be sure to do all you can to see all you can - there's no $40 flights to London available from the US.

Running into issues finding a flight home on August 1 less than 24 hours with layovers for around $1000-$1500...

Anyone have recommendations for finding good flights? Kayak and Orbitz aren't helping!

Have you tried breaking the trip into separate tickets for separate legs? For example, go to kayak and look for an early morning Rome to Boston (you'll probably have to try a handful of connection cities before you find the best one) and then search for Boston to MSP as a completely different ticket.

You might find something with a shorter connection than the search engines allow for an international flight......and then you have to decide if the shorter connection is feasible :p

of course there's the "be more flexible" in your travel dates which might get you a better fare.

(and at Kayak click the box to compare with CheapOair, maybe that'll give you better results.....probably multiple carrier tickets including some less well known carriers)

Coming back on the 31st guys. :(

I'll post a long post with what I learned and pictures when I get back.

For now, I have a question.

Is it ok if I bring my travel itinerary as a PDF on phone? Or does it need to be printed. Don't have easy access to a printer.

By itinerary, you mean like your flight schedule and all that? You don't need it.

The only reason you might need it is to prove to immigration at the country you're visiting that you have a place to stay and plans to return home and not overstay your visa. But when returning to the US, your US passport is the only thing you need to clear immigration.

Unless you're in first class, don't assume you'll have any way to charge your gadgets at your seat, so plan accordingly. If you were going to load up a laptop with 10 hours worth of movies to make it through the flight, think again.

Depends what sort of laptop you have. My 2013 MacBook Air can play back movies for 10 hours, easily ;)

Mind you, some economy seats now come with a USB in the headrest of the seat in front of them, right next to the seat. This is the case with many non-budget "normal" international airlines.

An iPad can be charged, but not a laptop.

Yep, I'd do it. I also write down my itinerary in my little paper notebook, but that's pretty old school (I'm 34 year old). ;)

I realise that the OP has already traveled but for anyone interested, www.onebag.com is a great site for travelling better. It advocates traveling with a single carry on bag, basically light travel.

Check out the bundling method of packing, it really does work.
