Hello,
Every time I restart my MacBook, the date is set to the same day in the year 2000. I know how to manually change the date every time, but it's annoying- especially because I'm currently running my laptop with no battery, so I'm turning it on and off all the time. Also, the option "Set date and time automatically" has never worked on this laptop. Can I change the default date and time so I don't have to fix it manually?
Thanks!

Yeah

There are several ways to change it manually but none of them will help more than doing in automatically (when connected to a network). Your problem is that when you pull the plug on your laptop, it resets the PMU (power management) and likely you don't have a battery or working battery in your unit to continue keeping track of the time. In conclusion, put a battery in your computer.
