How to change menu bar icon colors?

I have a black menu bar, and I would like to change the icon colors to show up more easily. Are there premade color icons I can download? I have tried editing the pictures for AirPort and it didn't work. I am using Leopard.

I used to theme a lot back in the Panther and Tiger days, but never tried it on Leopard. So I may not be able to help you here. But if you check out MacThemes, there are a bunch of threads on custom menu bar icons. So check it out and see if there are any that you like. Also, they usually come with a readme file so you can follow the steps to editing the icons.
