How to check AW build period

When I was anxiously awaiting my SB SS AW, I heard a few owners talking about how they were checking the build dates by using their serial numbers? Any idea how they were doing this..? I've tried searching everywhere and it intrigues me.

Somewhere you can put in the serial and find out the build date but I do not see what difference know the date would make.
