I can text *3282# to check the data usage on my phone. Can't do that for the iPad though. Is there an easy way to check usage without logging into my AT&T account?

On your iPad go to settings -> cellular data -> cellular data usage : current period

Either that or download a data tracker app.

Thanks! Didn't think about checking there. Just caught it for this month. Turned off Cellular data at 4.89 of 5GB.

I guess that usage resets on it's own at the end of the billing period? It's accurate on my iPad but I just checked my phone and see that it says 334GB. That seems like the lifetime of the phone. I've only used 185GB on cellular this month.

It does not automatically reset. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and you will see a link to Reset Statistics and below that will be the date of the last reset.
