I have an iPhone 6S and I'm thinking about getting a new iPhone. However, I wonder how do you check the time on a new iPhone with face unlock?

In the advertisements iPhone XS goes to home screen as soon as you look at it. However on the home screen the time is printed in tiny print and I would like to see the huge clock numbers on the lock screen, just like when I look on my iPhone 6S now. This is especially convenient during the day or in bright sunlight. But also at night with eyes half open.

I also worry for example when I pull out the iPhone while I'm on my bicycle to briefly check the time but that I won't be able to because the iPhone will unlock and I won't see the time instead have to fiddle with it.

How does it work?

You have to swipe up to go to the home screen. It ‘unlocks’ when you look at it which lets you view your notifications but it won’t go to the home screen unless you swipe up.

You have to swipe up to get to the home screen. So even if it unlocks when checkin the time it doesn’t go directly to the home screen.

It doesn't go to the home screen until you swipe up. When you "wake" the phone, the time is shown and it will show the phone is unlocked but you have to swipe up.

so you may now realize that although you can see the time and lock screen, you won't be able to see your home screen unless you swipe up, which can be another awkward step depending on how you're using the phone. For some people, that's a big downgrade from Touch ID
