late 2009 MBP to HD CRT

I just picked up a free Sony 34HS510 series CRT and want to connect my MBP to it so I can watch online content. I have the MDP to hdmi converter but found out the TV only has composite/component/DVI inputs. I tried buying a hdmi -> dvi converter but that did not work. Then I noticed when reading the manual online that the dvi port is not compatible for PC use. Anyone else have experience with this setup: MDP -> VGA and then VGA -> component cables and getting it to work? Thanks!

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro late 2006 model. I been trying to hook up a dvi to vga cable to run to my tv and cant seem to figure out why it is not working. I tried going in to the preferences to mirror the screen and that does not show up. I also tried to detect displays and that also did not work. Then I started to research some more and was reading to hold down the mac button and the R key which in result made a loud beep noes and started up again and still nothing. I then tried shutting down the mac and then restarting it and holding the control command and the R&P down, that did not help either. I tryed unpluging and replugging, hooking then up at different times and still nothing. I am at a loss here and would be great if some one might know the reason behind me not being able to hook it up to the tv.
