I was just scanning photos of the MBA, and realize it doesn't have a Firewire port. I have my bootable backup on a Firewire drive. So what's the solution here?

I see MBA has two USB 3 ports. Would I need to buy a USB 3 drive? Are they bootable?

    A USB to Firewire adapter?

    Thanks much!

    Yes. (You asked).

It's right there between "Faster all-flash storage" and "Display, camera, and mics"

Ah, you're right, denser than a doorknob I be. I neglected to flip the port images over to see the other side of the MBA. Duh...

    Thanks again!

Don't know what you use now, but you can make a bootable disc by using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy backup software.

    Yes, I use SuperDuper.

Another area where I'm dense though, is that I don't know if a USB drive can be made bootable. Can it?

Yes, it can. As long as the disc image is bootable in the first place, the USB drive can be made bootable. There's different ways of doing it based on your source OS, but for OS X, these instructions should work.
