Honestly dude, use this:

Where's the closest Windows PC store? There isn't one. If your "custom" built laptop, that your brother made, stops working when you most need it, you are SOL.

However, Apple has warranties- 1 year factors, up to 3 years with Applecare. If something doesn't work, they will either fix it or replace it in under a week, and almost always for free. If the GPU on the custom laptop dies, you might as well throw it out...

Hi if its for College a Mac will last you all four years the pc will not.

I don't know where you are getting this information. Is it just anecdotal? The statistics show that Apple's portables are in-line as far as failure-rates go with Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. Take into consideration that Apple's lowest-priced notebook is $999 while the other makers have plenty of sub-$500 notebooks and netbooks included in their failure rates.

Locations.

You have two very good choices.

1) Be grateful that you are being given a large sum of money by your mother and get a Windows 7 laptop. They're really excellent and will demonstrate you're being adult about it. Wake up and look around you, loads of students are doing very well with them.

2) Go get a job and learn what it means to save enough, to buy the Mac for yourself. There's a lot of satisfaction in growing up.

It's a simple as that. If you don't think so, the only one you're fooling is yourself.

Welcome to life.

I do have a job.. They are resisting to let me buy something with my own money and are giving me half

hmmmmm Don't feel bad, but there is not way I would get my child a rolex, the more I read this thread I think you just want a MBP for the image. Do you have any actual reasons other then the cool factor to own a MBP? Have you even used OS X? Don't worry I was the same when I was young, my Macs and Rolex's came much later.

I don't have a Rolex lol... And I hate pc because I had SOOOOOOOOOOOO much trouble with them in the past...

Ok so I have a "apple hater" brother and he is telling my mom who is matching my 600$ for the laptop that apple rips people off and for 1200$ I can build a monster pc laptop... My brother compared the specs with her and she's starting to agree .... what do I do?!!! Now I might not get a MacBook!!! how do I now convince my mom that apple is still better?!?

Edit: I mean the title to say mother not brother lol

Stop being so spoilt, if you can't afford it yourself then you shouldn't buy it. Your brother is right, for the same price you can get a monster windows laptop, you should be happy that your mum is paying that much. stop complaining

I must admit I was raised quite opposite.
But, back to the case, just sit down with your mum, tell her why do you wont mac, tell her the benefits you will have, and explain to her that its even though its slightly expensive, it would be better for you in future.
Take her to the Apple store, and show here.

First, you need to convince yourself that it is well worth it...

For nearly all apple products requires you to do that first... ;)

It might do you well to read the thread before name-calling. The OP states that he has the money but his parents are willing to put up 600 as they would rather spend some money than him spend such a large amount.

I think the OP should divorce his/her family if he/she feels this strongly about the ability to "buy" a Mac.

There are currently 11 Microsoft stores in America. There are tens, if not hundreds of Apple stores internationally. I live a 7 hour drive from the nearest Microsoft store, there are 2 apple stores within 30 minutes of me; I feel I would be more likely to go to an Apple Store for service than the Microsoft store...

To be honest I'm not sure the OP knows why he/she wants a mac. It's hard to convince other people if you're not convinced yourself. Why do you want the macbook?

When I had a Dell they came out to my house the next day to fix it, no store necessary. For the same price as Applecare, their warranty also included accidental damage - so if I spilled a coke on my computer and killed it, they would replace it.

IMHO, the OP really only needs a basic PC for what he wants to do with it. A MBP would just be cooler. His mother and brother are right, a cheaper Windows machine would do just fine. The only real point the OP should make is that it's cooler, b/c that's the biggest difference for the casual user.

My thoughts exactly. If you have to ask how to convince someone you need a product, it means you either don't know why yourself or you don't have a good enough reason.

I had a similar experience with our Dell desktop, then again maybe it was such a pleasant experience because the technician was an old family friend. However, one does not have the convenience with a Dell of being able to walk in to a store as soon as a problem presents itself, and the Dell phone support is TERRIBLE; Every time we had a problem, we had to wade through endless back-and-forth with some call center employee reading the script before we could ever get to the point of having to have a service call scheduled.

Why the need to be so harsh instead of constructive?

At any rate, I think you want a MacBook mostly for the image. He's got a MacBook, he'c cool! You see it a lot with college aged kids and high schoolers that have no use for it application wise. "More expensive = better" right?

As others have pointed out, do the research, compare software/applications to Windows counterparts. Compare longetivity, just don't go on about how much you really need it as it doesn't provide you any progress.

Its really you get what you pay for.

reminds me of this nag of a classmate of mine. She laughed at me for wasting $600 on my MBP when she said her PC had the same specs but was half the price. Few months later, she gets a virus and loses all her work, while my MBP was chugging along just great and had a time machine backup as well.

I know it was mean, but I just couldn't resist rubbing it in her face that "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!"

She ended up spending over $1000 just to recover her data...I wonder who paid more in the end?

now a Dell, I'm in a unique situation where the CEO of Dell, Michael Dell, lives just a few blocks away from me. I guess if I had a Dell and ended up with a dud and tech support was useless, I'll just hop on my bike, ride over to his house, and pester him to get it fixed!

You don't cuz it's not. Apple is mid range on reliability and they over charge for the HW and they on purpose limit what the hardware can do on occasion.

Their ia really nothing special about Apple other then their design and case building materials. Some have said that ever since they stopped using Asus as a supplier and moved to Foxcon the quality even went down.

Apple is nothing better than Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Lenonvo, Asus...it just uses better case designs and OS X instead of Windows.

I remember when I got a Mac my mother insisted it was too expensive and I should just buy a good 'ol computer because her friends told her the same. She wanted to cover half of it like your situation. So I just paid for it myself.

I believe the last time I've checked, my parents both have Macs. And their friends have all been buying Macs.

I agree. I like my MBP but my dell gets excellent milage for the price. the MBP battery life rivals the dell.
the dell has a larger screen, much higher resolution, more video/audio out options, bluray, and a fantastic all inclusive/accidental in home next day warranty for 2 more years for the same price as the 13 mbp

I say let him choose

Hi if its for College a Mac will last you all four years the pc will not. You can prob spend half the money and get another comp 2 years down the road but its prob still won't work as well as the mac a couple months later.

I switched to MACs in College because my roommates had one and when I procrastinated and waited to do my paper 1-2 hours before it was due the stupid server would make me update my computer every fing day for at least 30 minutes.

Sadly my brother wanted to get me an ibook at the time and I didn't want one(he was paying for it) I decided to get a Sony Vaio with a 22 inch screen and a monster video card to play video games with. Bad choice. I changed my mind 6 months into school and sold my Sony for half what he paid a couple months earlier and had to use all my work money to buy the better computer.

Its really you get what you pay for.

Yep, that's why I'm on my 3rd one on my 3rd year of college. Previous 2 were replaced under warranty.

Apple Care is great, but the quality is lacking in my opinion. I don't beat up my machines. I use them hard though. I'm in Computer Engineering, programming a lot, connecting USB sticks a lot, bringing it to labs, connecting lab hardware to it. I also gamed on them as well, so they were hotter than normal Macs.

How bout just buying the Windows PC? For your needs, you don't need a new Mac. If you really want one, grab a refurb off the online store. The main reasons a mac is superior include better builds, battery life, OSX and a backlit keyboard, although you'd be fine with a PC.

A Mac hater is always going to hate a Mac - and the problem is compounded by the lack of articulation when forming an argument as demonstrated in the post.

All I can say is that you want less drama with operating system upgrades that require one to hunt down drivers (from vendors who might not exist any longer) let alone dealing with platform that has no direction thus putting the whole 'investment' into a state of limbo in terms of going forward. Buying a computer is more than just raw specifications but like I said, the lack of articulation in your current post tells me your mother is simply going to see a hyperventilating lad wanting to get something cool rather than a mature young adult who has a grasp of the issues which is why your brother is winning the argument.

As gakuran hitori has asked, "Why do you even need a Mac?" - something you have failed to outline. Your mum wants an argument by you but all you've given the forum is a post littered with multiple exclamation points and little structure.

The Mac is cheaper.
Proof:
Macbook Pro depending on Model, I wil work with a $2000 one. 3 year and 5 year figures are average computer lifetime "figures". IE How long until you would buy a new PC.
Macbook Pro 1x $2000, after one year sell $1800. $200 times 3 = $600 (I use $200 as a average figure, could easily get more or less).
So after a 3 year period you are effectively buying your "new" Macbook Pro for $600 and keeping the latest 24/7. Now you wonder what if you want yours to last 5 years? $200 times 5 = $1000, so even after 5 years you are paying $1000 for your "second" computer. Now if you consider this, no PC you buy for $1200 will last 5 years then on a 3 year basis the Mac will be $2600 compared to the PC $2400 which when you add warranty could easily add up to more then $2600.
Seriously take this into consideration, Mac resell value is something people rarely consider.
If you dont like getting a new MBP every year, it still works out:
$2000 MBP approx $1000 value after 3 years (Could easily be more or less). So if you consider that after 3 years you are going to sell the laptop for $1000 then really you are paying $1000 for the MBP + whatever tax you have to pay if you need to borrow the money and $1200 for the PC.

Why do you even need a mac?

Why do so many people even ask this question?

Do you think I "need" a Mac? I don't need one. I don't need anything in particular. I always "want" a Mac because the OS is better, and that's it. My needs are met by a Windows computer, but I like nice things of high quality. I didn't buy into image. How could I have done so? I've been using Macs for many years, and even when it wasn't necessarily "cool" to own a Mac, I owned one. I use it to check email, post here, and write some reports. That's it.

And if you really want to show her why a Mac is better, offer to take her to:

1. An Apple store, or even a decent reseller.
2. Best Buy.

Problem solved.
