using Mail as backup for Gmail?

Not sure if this is the best thread to put it in .. but I am new to the Mac (and I am still asking myself why I took so long to switch from Win to Mac :))

Anyway, I am also a HUGE google apps / gmail web interface fan. The only thing I not really like is the offline feature of gmail. Therefore I am looking for an alternative and was wondering if Mail can be the backup device when I use IMAP for my gmail account?

Any thoughts from you guys/gals?

Richard

I've got 7000+ emails on my Mac Pro and about 4000 on my MBP and I have never noticed any slowdown whatsoever. When compared to Outlook(doesn't matter which version) Mail absolutely screams. Searching in particular is one of my favorite ways to mock people at work that have to use Outlook. The only mail client I have found that is faster is a command line client the CEO of a company I was interviewing at was using.

The only annoyance I have encountered using mail is that my gmail accounts seem to reload/refresh every once in a while when I am checking them. Its back to normal almost immediately but it deselects the email I am looking at.

Yes you can view emails in offline mode when using Gmail in imap mode.

If you run Time Machine it backs up your emails as well.

Gmail with its keyboard shortcuts enabled....beats Mail every time. The added Labs feature is just a bonus.
