It seems as though iMessage was omitted because unlike the messengers in the report, iMessage cannot be installed on any other platform but Apple’s own. But iMessage has a huge user base. I know a lot of people who uses iMessage as their primary messenger, they just use what’s app to communicate with people overseas, group chats that involves people who use android phones or to send large files. I myself fit into that category, if it wasn’t for those reasons I’d never use WhatsApp.

Add me to that list as well. If/when I use What's App it usually comes at someone else's behest. And TBH, I don't see the allure!?

iMessage is just so comprehensive, I've never had a need for anything else.

This is my biggest pet peeve about iMessage. Sure the memojis and stuff are fun, but what about improving the actual function of iMessage? Threads based on contact info, not number, would be ideal. I have family all around the world and they swap SIM cards frequently while traveling back and forth. I have all of their numbers programmed into their contact info. Why does iMessage start a new thread with each number instead of continuing from where we left off before they swapped SIM cards? Come on Apple.

Yes. This. It's gotten better, but the "split threads" thing is infuriating. I've gotten it just from someone messaging me at my email address instead of my phone number, or vice versa. iMessage knows (or should) that these two threads are with the same person because they have the same contact info. Maybe this profiles thing will fix it?

My other HUGE request for iMessage (and really so many other text platforms) is this: for the love of god, why can't we do italics and other styled text? We can send pictures, videos, animated face-mapped pictures but we aren't even up to the level of the 19th century in typography.

This feature is also baked into the messages app
They "bake" the messages app? Weird!

Hmm, seems like another solution without a problem. But fun! That's all that matters, right?

Yep. iMessage only holds a majority in Australia, NZ and the US. The UK, Europe and Asia use WhatsApp or WeChat.

I'd assume so...
Hmmmm WhatsApp is not really a thing here (Asia or atleast SEA) if it weren’t because of my work (UK Company) I wouldn’t know about WhatsApp. People here uses Line, WeChat, Kakaotalk and Viber cause it’s also our payment method like in stores, grocery, everywhere else

The split actually depends on that person’s send and receive settings. You can either send and receive using Apple ID or number. Like if don’t want to give you mobile number, you give your email instead and still be able to send and receive iMessage. Also works with people who has multiple Apple devices like me. On my Mac my send and receive is my email address which I mostly use for business/clients and strictly work people, and my friends can contact me thru my mobile number which is on my iPhone. It’s a matter of preference really.

Sounds like Apple really wants to replace Facebook messenger and what’s app. I’m ok with this, but they need an iMessage app for Android users too as I can’t always tell my friends to get an iPhone and they actually listen.
Sounds like it's time to get some new friends.

1. cross platform messaging, which means an Android app. More Androids out there than iPhones. By not offer it they are forcing us to require either Facebook messenger or WA to communicate with everyone.

Apple knows their average revenue or profit per user over the lifetime of the ownership of the device. My guess is that to protect their revenue, an Android version of iMessage would need to be equal to that number. I’m thinking of a pretty big monthly or annual fee. No way it becomes a one-time purchase for a small fee.

Has anyone actually got this working? I'm on beta 2 and so is my friend and we are not seeing the pop up that says if you want to use that person's photo.

Do iMessage profiles do anything about the problem of multiple conversations to the same person using different contact details (email/phone number)?

Whenever the feature that was supposed to merge multiple conversations to the same person using different contact details (email/phone number) came about sometime in iOS 12.x, it didn't work for me.

However, iOS 13 DB 1 fixed that for me. Conversations I had with a friend via their iPad and their Android phone merged, as did a weird glitch when a relative's reply was sent as a text from their iPhone instead of an iMessage like the rest of their texts.

Hiya, helping to test and I ran into a problem.

I have multiple phone numbers (work and personal) associated with my Apple ID.

The edit name and share photo gives me an error, that due to that, you cannot set a name and photo.

Which seems odd to me, that I cannot set a profile pic and name if I have more than one number? I don’t think this is a minority problem.

Apple assumes that people with multiple numbers are different people sharing an iCloud account. Log a feedback request.

This explanation would be extremely daft and shortsighted. (not saying it is not true though :D) I was thinking there is some kind of technical limitation behind this.

If anyone interested, this currently is fixed in iPadOS Public Beta 2.

I’m on 13.1 and I’m still getting this error. I have another phone number associated with my Apple ID that I use when I travel and for some reason it’s preventing me from using this feature.

I like the idea of them making an iMessage app for Android, but also keep in mind that a lot of people say that iMessage is what keeps them in the Apple Ecosystem. So putting it on the competition would most likely decrease iPhone sales and give people another reason to switch to Android.
