i have a number of different email addresses (all Apple ones). How do I delete one permanently so that I no longer get mails to it? Thanks

Are these multiple iCloud accounts? If so, just remove the amount from the device in settings. There is no way to close and account that I know of.
Are these perhaps iCloud email aliases you created? You can login to icloud.com and in the mail settings there you can manage the alias email addresses and remove the ones you do not want.
They are xxxx@me.com (not real one 🙂 ) and then I guess Apple gave me the equivalent in iCloud ones like xxxx@icloud.com. I am getting a lot of unsolicited junk and oddball emails coming and I just want to get rid of that address to eliminate any future mail to that address.

There is no way to close the account. Just stop using it and remove it from your devices, then make a new iCloud account and add that back.
Just be careful though... if you are using this for your AppleID to purchase apps and things you would want to keep it.
I don't see how I remove it from the devices. It's not my main email address, which is the one I use as my Apple ID
If it is not your main iCloud account, you may have added it in Mail, Contacts and Calendars in Settings.
That is how I have my wife's iPad setup. I use the main iCloud/AppleID account in the iCloud settings then add her iCloud account for mail only in that Mail, Contacts and Calendars section.
You can remove the mail account from iOS devices under Settings/iCloud (disable the Mail button).
If you want to stop receiving mail to one address entirely without removing the account, you can also create a forwarding rule. Login to iCloud.com, goto Mail and click the settings button on the bottom left. Then under "Rules" add a rule for mails that are "addressed or Cc'd to" the email address in question, with "Move to Trash" as the action. This way, all mails sent to this address will be discarded immediately.
Okay, that helps a bit. I guess I was hoping to get rid of the email address (without getting rid of my main one) so that if anyone sent an email to it, they would get a message back saying it was undeliverable.
Nope... they are all aliases of each other. So bob@mac.com bob@me.com and bob@icloud.com are all the same thing.
