It's all over the place right on this board. When someone ACCIDENTALLY cancels their VZW prepaid service by selecting "cancel now" instead of "cancel later" the SIM is fried. Known issue. ATT states on their website att.com/ipad that after 60 days of non-use you must create a NEW ACCOUNT but have no experience with what happens to the card itself. VZW I am sure as MANY people here have had that issue.

Talking about VZW not ATT.

Ok, That was not clear in that early post. VZ bad, ATT good

----------

I am sure that 5 months from now VZ will have been forced to work this out and the SIMs will be free.....or

Apple store will have them as a give away swap.

This is crazy...And I am so glad i asked. So I just want to be totally clear. I only have to be concerned with selecting "close later" as opposed to "close now". If I choose "close later" my data will expire after the 30th day and I won't have any problems re-upping my data at any time, with no sim issues as long as 5 months doesn't pass. Is this correct?
Yes, (VZW) choose CLOSE LATER and you should be safe. One other caveat, if you go more than 5 months INACTIVE is also will "expire" (as in be dead).

If it does go "dead" what do we need to do to get vzw 4g again, what are the costs involved?

Interesting. I just spent almost 2hrs in my local "regional" store and they would give or sell me a new sim come hell or high water. While there they were on the phone with various support lines, regional managers and the answer was the same. We can't sell (or give) you a sim without an account already attached to it.

Maybe the information hasn't dribbled down to them yet. Where are you located?

I had the same experience in a store (Woodbridge, NJ). They would not give/sell me a 4G sim card under any circumstances unless i created a post-paid account. Had to go to apple to get a new iPad in order to keep the pre-paid data

Thanks! I appreciate it. I hope this is just a temp. glitch for VZW. If it's not, and this is VZW's way of hoping we screw up in order to be forced into a contract, they are much more stupid then I had thought.

I was at the Woodbridge store in the lot outside the mall yesterday around 2PM. Just got back from Apple store in Menlo with a replacement iPad. The guy there (Apple store) kept telling me the VZW will work without a SIM.

You would need to get a replacement sim which for MOST people posting, including myself, they would not give you (unless you agree to a postpaid yearly plan). They told me to return the iPad and get a new one with a new sim in it which I just did because I was tired of dealing with it. Hours on the phone with VZW and almost 2hrs in 2 stores yesterday.

A couple people (the vast MINORITY) posted that they were able to get a replacement sim from VZW but most of us were not.

I have a 2nd eBay VZW micro-sim coming to see if that will work. The first one I got did not. It seems to have been defective which I find hard to believe but I'm giving it 1 more shot before I convince myself that (as VZW has told me) I need a "special" sim for the VZW iPad. I do not believe that but the first one didn't work (VZW tried everything but they couldn't activate it). If the 2nd one from a different seller has the same problem then I will have no choice other than to believe them.

This is the one I ordered as a test and backup: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Verizon-Wir...FF-for-Samsung-Stratosphere?item=290688440752

They HAVE to eventually get this straightened out because it is ridiculous not to be able to get a sim. Everyone should email the Apple CEO and complain. Maybe that will get some action.

Make sure he choses CLOSE LATER because if he chooses CLOSE NOW the card is fried and (currently) virtually unable to replace.

Telecast with AT&T I know for you you don't need to wait at all. I had a sim in my iPad and I bought another iPad. I login with my acc and it transferred my service to the new iPad.

Then with my old iPad I signed up for another account. It worked fine!

AT&T iPads sims are not burned after a single use.

We're talking about VERIZON not ATT.

Everyone who has had this issue should report it to apples feedback site.
That's get you nowhere fast as it technically is a Verizon issue, but do that AND email to COOK.

I'm in Delaware (Lewes/Rehoboth Beach). They didn't hesitate at that location, which was consistent with what the national CSR on the phone said... Agree that it sounds like lack of training. Curious if it may be a difference between "native" VZW stores and partner locations, too. (FWIW, the one I went to was a "native" one.) Good luck!!

Besides the no state sales tax that why we want to move to DE in another year when my wife retires. :) I'm ready today since I retired last year. My kids and grandkids live near Philly so DE would be about 1/2 the distance we are now in north Jersey.

I was on the phone with "National CS" both from home and from 2 VZW corporate (you call native) stores for HOURS. The phone folks all agreed that "they should give you a SIM" but they really had no clue as to what was going on or how the store worked and they wouldn't mail me one so they were useless. I spoke with 4 levels of tech people and I spoke with at least 4 departments on the phone. Everyone tried to help activate the existing card which was NEVER activated and they eventually gave up but none would send me a card or tell the store how to do it. Basically my card was bad out the door.

Anyway, I ended up returning my iPad today and getting a new one from Apple and I have a couple VZW micro-sims coming from eBay for $6 each and am going to see if they work (and they SHOULD). If they do I'll have 2 VZW "backups" and a couple ATT backups and should be in good shape for a while until the VZW morons get their trickle down information straight.

If the "eBay sims" work it should at least remove some of the aggravation trying to deal with the VZW store morons. The VZW guy actually had the sim in his hand but was unable to find a way to "sell" it to me (even for $0) without attaching a post-paid number to it. Heaven forbid he just hand it to me and say "see ya." That would have been too easy. This is all too new for them.

Problem not solved

I just got back from the Apple store. I tried to cancel my auto renewal on my Verizon prepaid and it deactivated my Sim card. They said I did everything right. When I got home I googled the problem and found your forum. How is it that these posts are all dated in March and Apple is still telling people that you can cancel and deactivate. It is now July people! This is not just a Verizon problem it is an Apple Verizon problem!
