How to disable HDR system wide on Mac OS for the built in display?

My Macbook Air late 2019 (Intel Processor, base model), support HDR for its built in display, its enabled by default, and you can´t turn it off.

Its built in average LCD screen its not up it, or course, and its look awful, too dark and dim. You can turn it off in Safari by enabling the developer menu, going to experimental features, and disabling "HDR media capabilities", which works for Netflix and Youtube (they serve you 4K SDR streams instead), but as there is no way to disable it system wide, watching content in the Apple TV app, for example, its a chore.


Any way to turn it off for the built in display?.

Thanks in advance. I´m using the latest stable release of Mac OS Monterey. No beta software at all.

HDR is a video format with 10 bit color depth (as opposed to 8 bit for SDR). Displays are HDR capable but only content can be HDR. If you want more uniform brightness, you can try reducing you display contrast in System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Display.

I don't have a 2019 MBA, but you can try this:

System Preferences
Option-click Displays (I repeat: click on the Displays icon in System Preferences while holding down the Option key)

You then might be offered the (normally hidden) option to uncheck "Allow extended dynamic Range"

This does not work for all models of Mac, but here is an example:

I found your solution via a search and tried it. Clicking the checkbox does nothing (remains checked) on my MBP14"
