Great! That makes me feel a lot better! Now I just need to get it connected to the wifi. It was fighting me on that last night, so I decided to just let it be. But now I have motivation!

Classic will be surprisingly simple to get working. All you need is to copy an OS 9 System Folder from just about anywhere. Nothing to install, just copy a System Folder to the root of the hard drive.

Do I do that in the same way that I installed 10.4.6 (burn to a disk and install) or is there a better way to do it? I've seen a few people mention a way to do it with a usb drive, but I haven't found more detailed how-to on how that works.

Also, does this update include the things that will enable classic or will I have to do that seperatly?

As suggested, if your wifi is not working grab the combo update from the garden and copy to a usb drive and then run on the PowerBook.

That sounds really easy! It looks like i'm closer that I thought to being able to play some games!

Turns out my wifi was working the whole time and it just wouldn't load any web pages because it couldn't "establish a secure connection". But software update was working fine so I am now fully updated! And as a bonus, safari is loading webpages now so i should be able to get onto Macintosh garden to get what i need for classic!

You don't need to boot from the disk image, so putting the image itself on a flash drive will work just fine. :)

Great perseverance! Well done 👏

Ok so I think I found the right thing on Macintosh garden for classic. I downloaded the second file from this page. https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-922-system-folders

It dowloaded as a .sit file so hopefully that is the right thing. Now I feel silly asking this, but how do I find the root of the hard drive in tiger so that I can put this file there?
The root of a drive is always the beginning. Open the hard drive on the desktop and the very first thing you see is the root.

Ok so I copied the .sit file to what I think is the hard drive (but its labelled OSX?).

But when i go into classic section in system preferences I get this message.

Your download System Folder is an .sit file -- a file comressed in "stuff-it" format.
You need to "un-stuff" that file so it is an actual System Folder. The Unarchiver will do that very neatly, but you would need to do that on a Mac running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) or newer.

Thats what I ended up figuring out too! So i actually downloaded an old version of stuffit expander on my current computer and put it on a file drive to download it onto the powerbook. That didn't work tho, so i put the .sit onto the thumb drive and now i am doing what you suggested.

Hey I just wanted to give everyone an update since i did end up resolving this. Stuffit wants working so i ended up expanding the .sit on my normal computer and loading the system folder on to a usb. I dragged the system folder from the usb to the root of the hard drive, which on my computer is labeled OSX. I then had to go into system preferences, select the newly present classic button under the systems section, and select the correct folder for classic. I've tested a few games so far and they're all working great! Thank you all so much for helping me figure all of this out! This would have taken me so much longer other wise and I'm not sure I would have succeeded. So thank you all of you!

I apologise for putting this out here, but if your main use for Classic is games, then Jaguar's implementation is much better than Tiger's. Jag won't run on an A1139 tho.

Thanks for the tip! I needed tiger to run a few games specifically, but I'm curious why you're saying jaguar is better overall? I'm always up for learning something new!
