My RX 580 was undervolted. Does undervolting affect performance? I just think ~850 heaven benchmark on 1080p is way too low, what do you think?

I'm not sure as I don't own a RX 580 and have never undervolted anything in my life. You can go to this site and see what others are getting on their 580 https://egpu.io/build-guides/ (filter by AMD RX 580).

Why did you undervolt your card? Were you having temperature issues?

Undervolted for lower temps and less noise. Now i don't have a windows pc, so i can't reflash it back, lol

here is my 580 score same settings as his first post second score

yeah I would :)
mine does fine no heat issues no noise issues you can hear it when its cranking but IMHO its very quiet compared to my PC or my other macs etc.. so a non issue for me

@adamk77 how loud was your stock PSU fan with Vega 56? I hear only my GPU fans (RX580), they're loud. Also there's a bios switch on Vega 56, you used default one? I plan to try power saving one, its called balanced if i not mistaken.

It was loud during gaming. But it was silent otherwise.

I use the default one. I think that switch is for when you are flashing the card? I use "turbo" in Wattman.

Well, I finally have an eGPU and a Vega! Someone was selling a Razer Core X on Facebook for £200 with a warranty until November, and as a fellow university academic I decided he was trustworthy enough to purchase from.

Ended up getting a Vega 56 Red Dragon from Overclockers UK and I have to say I'm pretty happy with the results. The fan(s) in the unit are definitely noticeable, so much so that I think I will power down when not in use. What was more noticeable, was there seems to be loads of interference between the GPU and my studio monitors (maybe its the PSU). When gaming and when the GPU is working hard, the interference on my monitors is unbearable. So I'm going to have to see if I can come up with a solution for that.

Otherwise I'm super happy with the Vega 56, I can't be bothered with all of the undervolting and modification stuff, but if I need to eschew some extra power in the future I might consider it.

if its a hum buzz kinda thing google up ground loop audio issues pretty common

unless you have wireless speakers etc.. then dont know :)
or some other thing would be hard to tell without hearing etc.
hope ya get it figured out

It’s definitely not an earth loop type issue, I know all about ground sounds.

Nope they’re wired, connected via an external DAC to my computer.

I did some more testing by turning off the speakers. The same sort of sounds, similar to a sort of coil whine, emanated from the box (sounds like the PSU to me) - my speakers seem to be amplifying those frequencies, and it’s actually getting quite annoying!

@avxkim Nope your GPU isn't broken as mine only gives 37.8 fps , it's internal and i have a few more cores to play with... :)

10.14.5 screwed something up on some egpu builds. Prime, Hulu and Netflix streaming in Safari is randomly jerking and itunes streams are messed up. Everything is fine in Chrome though.

edit: I mean 10.14.5

I been using Chrome for Hulu for a while now. I can’t get Hulu to locate my area in Safari, I’m using Hulu Live. Your right though it use to work maybe a couple revisions ago.

Hi! I've been having a bit of an ordeal. I have:

Samsung C34J791 Monitor.
Mac Mini 2018 i5 8GB 256.
AMD Vega 56 Sapphire Pulse.
Sonnet Breakaway 550.

The egpu works well with the Mac and I have had a 24 hour battle to get it it working with Windows 10 in Bootcamp. I think I am there now. Will try and explain once I have recovered.

Finally managed to sort out my eGPU setup for my Mini...

After a bit of research I went with the Razer Core X and a Sapphire Vega 64, I bought the Razer Core X new from Microsoft (surprisingly good deal atm) and the Sapphire used off ebay.

For some reason I can't get the HDMI port to work on the card, but I'm using DisplayPort anyway so not too fussed.

The benchmark I got from it didn't blow me away, but obviously it's no comparison to the Mini's internal graphics.

The whole box is very quiet too, which is a plus.

My set up is still working. It will be difficult to document any sort of coherent steps because I tried so many things from several posts on this and other forums. Here are some things that might help:

- I put the Automate-eGPU EFI on to a USB stick that is in the back of my monitor.
- I could only get the eGPU to work using the TB3 Port nearest the Ethernet Port on the Mini.
- The set up only works if I leave the adjacent TB3 Port empty. All other USB and TB3 ports are fine to use.
- I could only get the eGPU to work using the DisplayPort above the HDMI port on the eGPU. HDMI didn't work.

I spent two evenings turning things on and off and moving cables around until it finally worked. I used the PIP mode on my monitor at one point but it didn't really help - other than to navigate to the EFI Boot Option.

I never got the eGPU to kick in when I had anything connected from the Mini to the Monitor via HDMI or TB3. Has anyone else got the eGPU to work while the iGPU is connected? It isn't a problem for me but would be interesting to know.

Hope this helps someone like this thread has helped me.

Really happy with the gaming performance in Bootcamp. I did notice my Mini getting incredibly hot (90-95 degrees) so installed Mac Fans Control and I set it to about 4,000 rpm before Restarting in Bootcamp and that keeps things around 60-70 when gaming (that is the only way I have found to ensure the fans run quickly when in Windows).

The only thing remaining is for Windows to make use of the Mini's Ethernet and I should be living the dream.
