I can’t believd it’s FINALLY happening even tho jailbreakers have enjoyed the “new iOS design” in dark mode since iOS 7

Wonder what the hold up was , if any , beyond milking features and creating pent up demand like shipping OLED iPhones without it

I'll be using the Sunrise to Sunset option. I'm wondering if the switch will occur suddenly while using the phone or will dark mode kick in after locking/unlocking the phone.

Embarrassed because of what? If you follow Apple at all, you know they take their time on almost anything with implementation of hardware/software/product releases, etc. That’s what is unique about Apple, everything they release is not ‘Perfect timing’, but it usually is unique in some form or another over the competitors.

Only now do we realize that a bright white light shining into your eyeballs all day is suboptimal? The people writing the code most likely don't use black text on a white background.

Especially when it’s not even available yet for the masses in September.....
Right. The unmentioned first step of the instructions is, "install iOS 13", which nobody should be putting on their primary phone - early reports are the first beta is buggy as hell (which is entirely reasonable, but some may be complacent, as last year's iOS 12 betas were said to be remarkably stable, even early on).

But every year there are some who install beta iOS on their phone, and then are astonished to find out it's buggy.

I was thinking the same thing!!!! I know readers here are fairly tech savvy but.......im sure there are going to be a lot who going into settings then..........wait a minute, this “how to” isn’t working!!!!! Are we supposed to bookmark this for 4 months down the road, or is this for developers who have it??? People, i would think these articles aren’t really written for.
Whatever.

everything in its infancy is unstable, the first airplane, car, train, human.

I wish they’d tie it to the ambient light sensor like a lot of apps do already. When the ambient light is low, switch to dark mode, move somewhere brighter, back to light mode.

I like that. But it has to be done properly. In my car with CarPlay, this is done for Maps and when I drive on a cloudy day, it switches back and forth all the time. Very distracting. I assume CarPlay uses a sensor in my car (as my phone is inside a closed cover) and it hasn’t properly been tweaked.

Dark mode tends to hurt my eyes more than help them so I don’t use it, but it’s nice iOS finally has the option. I think it would look better if it were more of a dark gray than black.

That’s how I feel. I actually feel like I’m living in bizarro world with so many people liking dark mode. It seriously makes my eyes bleed. The contract is so drastic that anything on the black pops so much it kills my eyes.

Like volume indicator.

I’m not familiar with coding at all, but couldn’t this have been an update to iOS 12?
It has nothing to do with the coding, but everything with marketing. Every new iOS Apple is dropping support for older phones, so people will buy the newer ones. We could be on iOS 1 with all the features iOS 12 has.

You don’t just tick on dark mode, and then that’s it. Much like dimming the brightness of your device in a normal mode...enable dark mode, then lower brightness to 25% etc. Then it’s ideal

Thanks for the tip. I’m going to try the “automatic” mode paired with True Tone so it only comes on at night dimmed.

I agree. I can’t believe it’s happening either I’m pretty excited as well. Seems it took google implementing it for Apple to do it as well. I guess they both kind of pushed each other. Competition is pretty good for consumers forcing innovation.

Dark mode in iOS13 is beyond the jail break inverted colors. Apple took their time to look at each iOS app and specifically designed them to look gorgeous in dark mode.
