If you fold the smart keyboard back behind the iPad, you get the standard on-screen keyboard, without having to change anything. When I am outside in the park on a bench for example and the iPad pro is on my lap, I feel more secure if I hold it with 1 hand while I type on the screen with my other.

I use my ASK as a stand most of the time, and at nights it is impossible to see the keys unless you turn the lights on in the room. I’d have to temporarily detach the keyboard to bring up the on screen keyboard. It’s a pain.Don't think you can do that. It's the same when you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to the iPad.
Out of curiosity, why do you need 2 keyboards at the same time?!defeats the purpose isn't it?

Don't know why Apple couldn't fit a few LEDs in there.
Doesnt even have to glow, even having the fonts printed with some reflective material would help. As it is, there is very little contrast between the charcoal keyboard and dirty white fonts, not enough to see the keys with only the display light.Don't know why Apple couldn't fit a few LEDs in there.
Personally, I think the iPad is more stable on my lap when I use it in "watch" mode than when it's in "type" mode - the iPad is closer to vertical, so it's less likely to fall backwards. Watch mode allows you to tilt the iPad and use the software keyboard.I already know that, but that is less secure when the ASK is on my lap and then using the software keyboard.
That is why I want to use it like that.

I don't know about the ASK, but on the Magic Keyboard pressing the Eject key in the upper right causes the software keyboard to appear.
