I would like to factory reset my 2018 Macbook Pro for various reasons (one being the crypto_val errors). It seems that quite a few people on these forums have done this, but that there are issues with certain recovery methods.

So, my questions to those of you who have wiped and reinstalled macOS on a 2018 Macbook Pro are:

1. How did you reformat the drive as APFS or APFS (encrypted)?
2. Which recovery method did you use (internet recovery, USB key, etc.)

I am just trying to find the best method to ensure I don't end up in a recovery loop as others have had happen.

Thank you!

Hello there

Just out of curiosity: is this error message preventing you to use your machine? Have you tried to contact Apple by chat for instance to know more about this error message?

I fixed this issue on my machine this morning.

1. I took a fresh backup of my drive to an external drive using Super Duper
2. I rebooted into recovery mode, ran disk utility, and erased my primary hard drive. I specified non-encrypted APFS.
3. I rebooted again into recovery mode and was prompted to connect to a wireless network
4. I reinstalled OSX
5. OSX then ran through the usual first time use routine and I specified the external drive with the Super Duper drive clone on it as the source for user data to migrate
6. After another reboot I ran first aid from drive utility again and there are no more crypto_val warnings coming up

Thanks for the steps! I really appreciate it.

You will need to reinstall the 10.13.6 supplemental update after you reinstall OSX too. It didn't cause the reappearance of crypto_val warnings so everything is good now on my machine.

1] go to the nearest factory by your living area
2] plug you 2018 macbbok pro into an outlet at this factory, maybe their breakroom or lobby.
3] restart the 2018 macbook pro while pressing “apple r”
4] follow insructions

You might have to wear a hardhat, depending on what the factory is manufacturing.

Hope this helps!

I reinstalled the update, and everything seems to check out. Thanks again!
