As other users have mentioned, does this mean that anybody could do the second procedure and set up the AirTag for themselves, or when setting it up again does it detect that it hasn't yet been unlinked (I think setup happens online)?

Could someone test this?
Buy one and test it yourself. Post your results. The world is waiting!

Yes, that is the unknown item tracking. That doesn’t have anything to do with resetting the AirTag while still associated to your own Apple ID and not having it show up on the map with the updated location. It stays at the last known spot up until the battery was popped out and reset.

Saying that behavior is on purpose is speculation.
Oh I see what you’re saying now, apologies. But I’m not sure how often this will happen. I can’t even really think of a scenario where someone will want to reset someone else’s airtag. A thief wouldn’t have reason to since it will be useless to them either way (also at only $30 brand new, I don’t think they will be hot in the black market). The only scenario I can think of is someone who finds an airtag and wants to return it (if they happen to know whose it is or if they want to drop it off at a business near where they found it) or give it to the police as evidence—but the person wants be absolutely certain they can’t be tracked in the meantime. Otherwise, there is the slight chance some other person could come along and pop a battery back in and allow it to resume tracking. Uncommon scenario but that’s all I can think of. So I don’t know if that’s intended behavior, but only because Apple tends to be very overly cautious, I would guess so.

This went from “not an anti-theft device” right to being a “pro theft device”.
No way I’m putting this piece of cr*p on my keys, knowing someone may be encouraged to steal them so they can use my airtag and I’ll have to change all my house locks.
How are they encouraged to steal them? This article is about why people can’t use stolen airtags.

AirTags are made to track LOST items, not stolen ones. It is not an anti-theft device. It is not made so you can hunt down a thief and retrieve your items. It is not made to be thief-proof. I feel like people are making the AirTag into something it’s not.
If that is the case, why is “Bike” a default name option? Do they think I could just lose my bike? It’s a pretty big thing to misplace!

It sounds like you haven’t ever cycled to a train station with lots of cycle parking, or one of the large cycle parks they have in Amsterdam. It’s very easy to ‘lose’ your locked bike in either scenario.

Thanks for your testing.
Question: You say it wanted to pair again. Were you able to pair again? Did you need to [Remove] the tag from your items to enable you to re-pair it?

Cheers.
No problem. I was able to re-pair it to a device with the original Apple ID without having to remove it first. It winds up figuring out (probably through serial number) it’s the same one as before.

The Netherlands, at Train stations.

Nowadays though most have guarded cycle parking places like the one below.

Too bad for you that people wont do what you tell them to do, no matter how much you gripe about the CORRECT way to use AirTags.
I mean they can do what they want, just don’t expect something to be something it’s not. I don’t expect my 2 wheel drive suv to climb rocks and ford rivers. AirTag owners shouldn’t expect them to provide CSI level perp tracking capabilities.

its a fine line between lost and theft...

havent people tracked phones to recover them and they warned people to inform the police to get involved rather than turn up on doorways? (and didnt they hide exact location for safety?)
Just because that has happened, I assume, it doesn’t mean it was designed to.

Don’t think anyone is wanting to hunt down a thief. It’s a new product and we are all trying to understand how it works. Yeah, anyone can take it off a key ring and throw it away and keep your stuff.
From reading this forum, it certainly looks like people want to go Hardy Boys and find the thieves. I love the crowdsourcing of ideas, but don’t complain, not that I think YOU are, that it doesn’t protect against things that Apple never said it would.

Why do they even have the second option to remove from Apple ID? Makes this less and less secure, meaning people will still try to steal it and use it for themselves
People always are so eager to comment about articles they don’t really read, how fascinating!

So someone can find my AirTag and reset it to take ownership before I even realize it’s lost? I would think that these would have the same ownership lock that iPhones do… (forgive me but I forget what they call it… maybe Authentication Lock or something?)

We already read it. The question was what happens when someone has not already removed it from the account, and does the reset. That is why someone asked to test it.
Even worse, people are SO eager to comment that they only have time to read every sentence in half, how fascinating!

Why won't they do that on AirPods ?

Lost two already :(((((
Everything should be like the iPhone, passcode and ****...

How can we ask apple that ?

I just got a new AirTag (via Amazon ... not a pawn shop) and the "Connect" dialgue refers to a(nother) Apple ID. I reset the battery and confirmed (the correct, the only) Apple ID on iPhone (and MacBook Pro). "Find My" set-up window confirms Apple ID (does show telephone number ... ) Totally stymied. Solution? Suggestion(s)?

Call Amazon and let them know this doesn’t work, ask for a replacement. Good luck! 👍🏻
