How to find memory hog? 37 GB swap Used after boot.

Ever since around 26.5 I seem to have a mystery memory hog. Less than five minutes after rebooting the swap seems to max out and then maybe 10 minutes later the swap goes down to less than a gig. Then at random times it peaks again. Sometimes Activity Monitor seems to get overloaded and blanks out with only Swap Used showing and not updating. I quit Activity Monitor and restart and then it reports with lower numbers.

Is there a way to find what process is using memory other than Activity Monitor as it is not showing anything?

You’re set to “My Processes” - I think it’s in the View menu to see “All” processes, but away from my Mac at the moment.

Of course this morning it was fine with memory. So I tried a Microsoft Office update that I know fails. It showed the installd process going to 77 GB before failing.

As a diagnosis I am running EtreCheckPro and it is going over as well. After 15 minutes it finished and reported the problem being low memory and poor performance. Not very helpful

There are more fields in Activity Monitor - right click on the header row and you'll a bunch more memory fields.

Also, always suspect Adobe. Their software is a bloated mess and takes over your Mac in a lot of ways.

Looks like spotlight and Firefox are "topping the list" of memory hogs.

First thing I'd try:
Quit firefox.
Shut down the Mac (completely) and then reboot.
DON'T open Firefox.
Try another browser instead.

The next is spotlight.
That's more complicated.

I never liked the idea of spotlight from the time it was first introduced on the Mac OS (almost 20 years ago...?) I just didn't want constant "indexing" of my drives. Of course, this was back in the platter-based HDD days.

My solution:
DISABLE spotlight.
Turn it OFF. Stop using it.

Which I did back then, and have continued to do for 2 decades.
I found "alternate search tools" which work for me:
EasyFind
and
Find Any File.

I've gone further than 99.99% of Mac users in controlling runaway memory use.
I now have virtual memory disk swapping TURNED OFF.
VM can't write to my boot drive, forcing everything to run in "live memory".
Works for me and NO crashes.
But I don't overload the OS and almost NEVER use ANY tabs in my browsers.

And I ordered my m4 Mini with 32gb... twice "the base amount". I wanted headroom.

Again, I'd look hard at Firefox and spotlight (that's where the "mds_stores" activity is coming from).

What comes to browser, it can even be some "rogue" website that starts to eat up available memory if left open.
With Spotlight I usually turn all unneeded features and apps off in Spotlight settings as about 90% of them are not needed for me.

Also, you should also check and sort by the Real Memory column.

The Memory column includes the effects of memory compression - in your example above Etrecheck is showing 44GB of Real Memory but only 4GB of Memory - these differences may be important and in this case could reflect a memory leak in Etrecheck.

No other apps are showing above a Gig - real, total, private, or shared. Real Mem goes to 24 GB for EtreCheckPro at the end.

A few times I see the Swap going up after rebooting and before opening any browsers. I never caught it but think that is one of the installd issues as to reboot a setup/install popup blocks things.

Why should I worry about an app taking a few MegaBytes when a single app is taking tens of GigaBytes ? I'm thinking something old I have installed is telling apps how to allocate memory incorrectly.

I never ran EtreCheck before today. I loaded it as a diagnostic.

Here is when I try to run the Microsoft Office / Excel updater. It eventually fails and releases the memory.

You have a lot of crap fine software installed.

For example, I'm seeing that you have both Adobe Collaboration and OneDrive (both are file synchronization utilities that are known to cause issues). Do you need both of these?

You also have BOINC installed (which is mostly obsolete).

The fact that you are having two different apps (Etrecheck, and Microsoft Update / installd) both running up enormous memory footprints leads me to have some ideas:

* Another app or extension is doing something with file usage which is causing bugs in other apps - I would suspect an antivirus app foremost.
* Could it be that the apps you are running are simply out of date. For example, the Microsoft AutoUpdate app is version 4.83. What version do you have?

Microsoft AutoUpdate is showing as 4.83 - it updated itself but couldn't update its apps.

I will scour the machine for anti-virus apps as I thought I got rid of them a long time ago.

I use OneDrive for my Windows PC. It has been a mess so will remove.

Adobe Collaboration I wasn't aware of - will remove.

I've been using BOINC for years. I disabled it for a bit and did not seem to make a difference.

Another troubleshooting step that might be worth trying is to go into Users & Groups, create a new user account and try restarting and logging into only that account. Might help with getting a baseline.

I use App Store versions of Microsoft apps where possible to lessen the effect of Microsoft Autoupdate (only unavoidable one is Microsoft Teams).

OneDrive can have big footprint if synced libraries are big and/or are in active shared use where there are many changes to files happening all the time - but same applies to other cloud storage sync apps as well.

I'm not sure if it's Microsoft-related, but the only issues I've had with my M4 Mini (running Tahoe) are with Microsoft products (OneDrive, Office 365). They worked well for me before upgrading to Tahoe last year. Every couple of weeks since then, they will stop responding and require a reboot to make the computer run well (I think it's more of a OneDrive-syncing issue). They are the only issues I've had running Tahoe, which means the problem is with them and not Tahoe. I don't know if your issue is also with Microsoft applications, but that's one of my guesses.

That does tell you something, though. Whatever it is, it’s likely found in your Login Items & Extensions. Scroll through and look for stuff that says “affects all users”. (Creative Cloud does this, as just one example.) Even if you’re on a brand new clean user account, things with that permission toggled still get to launch.

Try toggling some/all of these OFF and then restart and see what happens. Might be a bit of trial and error but hopefully you’ll hit on whatever broken/badly behaving thing is running.

then try MS updater while in Safe Mode, is it still failing?

If these processes go mad then it might be even related to NVRAM - especially if it is Apple Silicon machine. Unfortunately on Apple Silicon NVRAM can be completely reset only by DFU restore.

That's a new one. It looks like something in your install architecture is scrambled. Obviously EtreCheck is running wild with 30 minutes of runtime and 27 GB of memory. It's obviously the install system that's causing it. You shouldn't have all of those duplicated in your install history. Plus, when the operating system is tracking its own analytics, it's reporting heavy CPU usage from system_installd and installd.

I have seen similar problems in the past, but never to this degree. If the system install file was really huge, it could cause EtreCheck to slow down and consume lots of RAM because it would read the entire file into memory and parse it with a DOM parser. I changed that to use a SAX parser which definitively fixed the problem. EtreCheck only looks at installs in the past 60 days, so it can churn through a huge install XML file pretty quickly.

In your case, that isn't helping. You seem to have lots of duplicate entries in your install history. I don't know why. I've never seen that before. The install history is this file: "/Library/Receipts/InstallHistory.plist". Apple plist files are just a special syntax of XML. This file is typically only a few KB in size. How big is yours?

You might need to delete that file and then restart your computer. You'll lose your install history, of course. But other than that, it shouldn't cause any ill effects. And it should definitively fix this problem, both in EtreCheck and in your system startup.
