How to force Startup Manager to appear at boot?

I want the Startup Manager (list of all the bootable volumes) to appear at boot and wait for me to select what I want, without having to hold down the Option key. I know that there is rEFIt, but it doesn't work for OS X 10.8 on an rMBP, and there is also rEFInd, but similarly, it too doesn't work [yet, I hope it will be updated before long]. Are there any other options/ways to do this?
