Step A - Launch your Disk Utility
Step B - Choose your HDD from the list
Step C - Click "Erase"
Step D - from the "Format" dropdown list, choose APFS (name the volume if you like)
Step E - Click "Erase"
Step F - wait a few seconds (not really a step, I suppose)
Your erased HDD mounts, and you are done.
(the other step F: there's probably no good reason to format an HDD with APFS. Just my opinion :cool: )

I can think of maybe one reason, CCC backups.
I really like how CCC handles APFS snapshots, in my opinion far better and more easily accessible then Apples Time Machine.
So for backup purposes where speed is not essential I can visualize a large spinner doing a decent job.

The correct answer is:
Don't do this.

APFS will actually slow platter-based hard drives down (due to excess file fragmentation).
Leave your spinning drives in HFS+.
They'll serve you better that way.
