installed my 500gb external hard drive (model WD External Media 5000BEV) to use it in the time machine on my macbook pro with mac osx system. Now I dont want the time machine anymore, i want to format it to use it at work. and the system complains: Could not unmount the disk . I've tried almost everything, I do not know what else to do. thanks in advance .

What about disabling Time Machine first and/or removing the HDD physically via pulling the cable and the plugging it back again and trying to format it again?

I know it is a crazy method but if you have a windows machine around, you could use g-parted and reformat it that way. I have had to do it a couple of times for times like you are describing.

I've done that, did not work.

I've done that, did not work. I also tried all the functions of Disk Utility. It seems that the HD is locked.
i will try what njean777 say . and come back to say what happens .
thanks
