how to format external HDD for Mac&Win

Sounds like a stupid question but what is the best way to format my external HDD so I can also access the files on a Windows PC? Is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the right format or do I have to use the MS-DOS (FAT) format???

NTFS. You'll also need Macfuse or NTFS-3G to read/write with OS X.
